aristotle
Greek Philosopher Aristotle came up with an idea called Horror Vacui – empty space would always try to suck in liquids or gas to stop it from being empty. His idea was supported by Galileo Galilei
He also said space cannot be empty. -
Period: 350 to
history of space
-
René Descartes
French Philosopher, Mathematician and Physicist René Descartes argued that all of space must be filled this supported Aristotles views -
Friedrich bessel
German Friedrich Bessel measured the distance between 61 Cgni (star) and earth it is 10 light years away. -
Edwin Hubble
Astromer, Edwin Hubble worked out the distance to the Andromeda Galaxy.
Hubble, changed our understanding of the universe by showing the existence of galaxies other than ours.
He also discovered that the amount of Doppler shift observed in the light spectra from other galaxies increased or decreased depending on the distance from earth the other galaxy was. This became known as Hubble's law, and helped us to know that the universe is expanding. -
Big Bang
Georges Lemaître a Belgian Physicist first proposed the Big Bang.
His theory says that the universe was originally very small and has since expanded since the Big Bang
Matter left after original expansion collapsed and formed the stars, galaxies and other astronomical objects this left behind a deep vacuum called outer space -
Luna 1
This was the first successful fly by mission that caught a glimpse of the moon. The Luna was launched by the Soviet Union, it reached the moon and prooved that there wasn't a magnetic field surrounding the moon. -
Luna 2
Luna 2 was the second of a series of spacecraft launched in the direction of the Moon it was the first spacecraft to land on the Moon. After the launch the lunar 2 released an orange cloud of sodium gas which help the soviet scientists track it and was also an experiment to study the behavior of gas in space. The mission confirmed what lunar 1 had found, that the Moon had no magnetic field, and found no radiation belts near the Moon. -
Apollo 11
Man first landed on the moon, this is a result of the space race between the ESA and NASA as they where competing to see who could reach the moon first. Neil Armstrong became the first man to set foot on the moon. Armstrong and Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin, walked on the moon and returned to Earth. Michael Collins, another crew member, acted as a command module pilot and stayed in the orbiter. They also brought back lunar samples and photos. -

Hubble Space Telescope
Hubble has far outlived its expectations and is going to stay in space untill 2014 when a new telescope will take its place in space. The hubble telescope has changed how we view space as it has viewed farther into space than any other telescope ever has. The telescope has discovered new galixies and lots of other great things that we wouldnt have seen without it.
