Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was passed by the U.S. Congress to end the extension on slavery. James Tallmadge of New York proposed an amendment to forbid the importing of Slaves. It would bring Missouri born slaves emancipated. -
Wilmot Proviso
The territory gained from Mexican War couldnt have slavery. There was a division in Congress and led to questions of property. It wasnt passed! -
Compromise of 1850
Gave new states freedom to choose(popular sovreignty). Texas gave up claim on New Mexico for $10 million. Webster supported it and Calhoun opposed it, the Compromise was rejected and passed as individual bills. -
Fugitive Slave Act
Result of the Compromise of 1850. There wasnt a trial for fugitives and they couldnt testify. There was a $10 reward for returning slaves and a $1000 fine for helping a fugitive plus 6 months in jail. Nine northern states passed "personal liberty laws" that gave some slaves rights. -

Bleeding Kansas
People moved in to sway vote and fighting broke out between pro and antislavery groups. Sack of Lawrence and John Brown's retaliation(Pottawatomie Massacre). -
Sumner/Brooks Incident
Charles Sumner of Massachusetts had a 2 day rant agains the South. On May 22, 1856 Preston Brooks caned Sumner on the floor of the Senate and he suffered shock and brain damage. -

John Brown's Raid
John Brown led 21 men to raid the arsenal at Harpers' Ferry, VA . He wanted to start a slave uprising and held 60 hostages. 8 of his men were killed and Robert E. Lee captured Brown and he was tried for treason and execution -
Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott's owner lived in a free territory and when his owner died, Scott wanted his freedom. The decision was that Scott wasnt free because property was property.
