Homestead Act
Congress passed this act that gave 160 acres of free land to people who would pay a filing fee and live and farm the land for 5 years. -
End of Civil War
President Jefferson of the Confederation was captured and then the Civil War came to an end. -
Transcontinental Railroad
Two railroads connected at promontory point connected the east and the west. -
Boss Tweed jailed
Boss Tweed ran a group of city officials called the Tweed Ring that had control of police, courts, and some newspaper. Thomas Nast exposed him with a newspaper cartoon for stealing millions of dollars. Arrested 1871 and convicted1873. -

Battle of little Big Horn
Sioux and Cheyenne were gathering because they were angry about the whites in the Black Hills and were attacked by Gen. George Custer, who had 250 men to thousands of Native Americans. The Native Americans wiped out the entire regiment. -
End of Reconstructon
Hayes was elected president and the compromise of 1877 made it clear he was ending Reconstruction. -
Chinese Exclusion Act
A law that didn't allow chinese people into the country for 10 years, but it was extended in 1892 and 1902. -
Time Zones created
The country was split into 4 time zones that were made an hour apart from the zones on either side of them. -
Pendleton Act is passed
This act set up competitive examinations for federal jobs and was also responsible for establishing the Civil Service Comission. -
Dawes Act
This act wanted to brake up reservations and giv them land to become farmer and eventually American citizens. -
Sherman Anti-trust Act
The Act made monopolies illegal to protect trade and commerce from unlawful restraint. -
Battle of Wounded Knee
Many Lakota Sioux were gathered at Wounded Knee creek when the army was sent to collect their weapons. A shot went off and the fighting started, 200 Sioux and 25 soliders were killed. -
Ellis Island opens
The island opens in New York Harbor to process immigrants. -
Model T invented
