In 1860 Abraham won the Republican nomination for President. This was after he lost an election running as senator which made him popular enough to win the republican nominee. This is an example of why he was head of the political party because he was head of the republicans for the election. -

Abraham Lincoln sends troops to recapture forts and keep the union together after his troops at Fort Sumter are forced to surrender. This is the start of the civil war. Because he is the leader of all the military and the highest rank, he leads the army, which is an example of his role as commander and chief. -

In September of 1862, towards the end of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln met with the southern states to try to negotiate to end the war and end slavery with the Emancipation Proclamination. -

After the war, Abraham Lincoln created and deticated a cemetary where the great battle of Gettysburg occured. Lincoln gave a speech and had a ceremony to honor those whose lives were lost. -
