Germany signed an armistice with the Allies
On November 11, 1918 the armisticce between the allies and Germany was signed in a railway carriage (train) in Compiegne Forest. This marked the end of the fighting in World War I. The principal signers were Marshal Ferdinand Foch, the Allied Commander-in-chief, and Matthias Erzberger, Germany's representative. It marked complete defeat for germany, but was neither and unconditional surrender nor treaty.
