At the Paris Peace Conference, the "Big Four"; United States, Great Britain, France, and Italy. They made a peace treaty called the Treaty of Versailles. This treaty, basically punished Germany. Germany had to pay reperations, limit his army, and give away the land. -

In the late 1800's, had ended in a crushing military defeat at the hands of the Ethiopians. Italy did manage to keep several smaller colonies in East Africa. In 1935, he used a dispute about the border between Ethiopia and an Italian colony as an excuse to launch an invasion. -
The Rhineland
Originally, Germany was required to keeps its troops out of an area near the Rhine River, called the Rhineland along the French border. It was meant to protect France against possible German Aggression. Hitler then violated the treaty by sending German Troops into the Rhineland. As an excuse, Hitler claimed that a recent French Military agreement with the Soviet Union threatened Germany. -

Spain in the mid-1930's was in the middle of a politcial conflict. It was between communism and fascists and nationalists. -
The Anschluss
Hitler wanted to reunite ALL ethnic Germans, including the Austrians. The Anschluss was a union with Germany. However, this was another german violation of the treaty. -

British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, and French Premier, Edouard Daladier, met with Hitler. They allowed Hitler to annex Sudetenland. Czechoslovakia protested the agreement. They hoped it would keep them out of the war. -

The Nonagression Pact
Hitler shrewdly won Stalin's agreement to stay out of Germany's way as they continued to expand. If they did that, Hitler promised not to attack the Soviet Union. He also agreed to give the SU parts of soon-to-be conquered territory. -
Nazi's invade Poland
Within days of the Nazi-Soviet Agreement, Hitler was ready to launch his strike on Poland. To provide an excuse, Hitler had a German criminal dressed in a Polish military uniform. The man was taken to the German-Polish border and shot. The next morning, Germany claimed they had been attacked by Poland, using the dead criminal as proof. When they seized Poland, the German's used Blitzkrieg, or Lightening War. It was a front line of tanks and airplanes.
