Unequal Treaties
United States and Japan sign Treaty of Kanagawa. Japan must open five ports to American trade. Americans can live in port cities, but did not have to obey Japanese laws. Paid very small tax on imported items; "flooded" JApan with cheap products. -
Commodore Perry
Commodore Perry arrives in Japan and forces Japan to open its ports to American ships to resupply. United States also demanded Japan to begin trading. (Gunboat Diplomacy) -
Meiji Restoration
Emperor Jeiji restored as supreme ruler of Japan. Japan begins modernization- new army, sent people to study in foreign countries, developed technology (trains, ships, telegraph). -
Meiji Constitution
Emperor restored to most powerful State Shinto religion, New land laws. People elected a Congress (Diet). -
Sino Japanese War
This war between China and Japan happened during 1894 to 1895. Japan wanted to conquer China's land. As a result of the war, Japan won and conquered Liaotung Peninsula (Port Arthur) and Taiwan. -
Russo-Japanese War
This war between Russia and Japan happened in 1904-1905. Japan declared war because Russia had Port Arthur (Russia took it the first time when Russia declared war against Japan because they had Port Arthur, when Japan was still weak from fighting against China), and Russia basically declared that Asians weren't allowed to conquer land at all which angered Japan, As a result Japan and its ally, Great Britain, won and got Port Arthur back. -
World War 1
World War 1 broke out on July 28th 1914, and ended at 1918. This war was between really betwen Austria-Hungary and Serbaria. Serbaria had assasinted the person who was going to become king in Austria-Hungary. Japan sided with the Allies (United Kingdom, France, Italy, U.S.A., Russia), and decided to declare war against Germany because they had Shantung. Japan won, and conquered Shantung along with some of German's western Pacific islands- the Marianas, Carolines, and Marshalls. -

Japanese forces invaded the Manchuria area becuase it wanted Chian's natural resources and markets. -
Japanese troops move into China
The trade with Tokyo becamse a major concern for President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the Congress in 1937. In the summemr of that year, more Japanese troops moved into China. They quickly captured much of the Chinese coast. -
Tripartite Pact
September 27,1940; a treaty that made Germany, Italy, and Japan allies. Japan acknowledged "the leadership of Germany and Italy in the establishment of a new order in Europe," while Japan was granted lordship over "Greater East Asia." -
Japanese troops invaded southern Indochina
Japanese troops invaded Southern Indochina. President Roosevelt reacted to Japan's invasion of Indochina by taking three major steps. First, he took control of all Japanese money in the USA. Second, e brought the armed forces of the Phillippines under American commance. And, third, he closed the Panama Canal to Japanese shipping. -
Pearl Harbor
Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, killing lots of soldiers and conflicting lots of damage to America. -
Battaan Death March
On April 4th, Japan attacked the Phillipines, trapping everyone inside. They led a march in which everyone was forced to walk for 65 miles to an internment camp. If the prisoners stopped, then they would be killed by the Japanese soldiers. -
Doolittle Raid
On this day, America decided to give Japan a warning that America would win the war, and Japan would lose. 15 or 16 aircraft carriers were sent out to bomb 5 Japanese cities, Tokyo, Nagoya, Yokohama were three cities that were bombed. The pilots landed in China (because of fuel problems), not aware that that was where Japan had another base, and some were captured, executed, and killed. But, some excaped? -
