On this day electronic surveillance equipment was installed. This equipment was installed in the Watergate building of the Democratic National Committee headquarters. -

President denys he had prior knowledge of Watergate
Many rumors were going around about President Nixon and about if Watergate was planned, and if Nixon had prior knowledge. In April of 1973 he talked to the senate and denied having any prior knowledge of this event. -
Three White house staff members resign
There were many different stories about the White House tapping and many people thought it was an inside job of the White House staff. This led to H.R. Haldeman, John D. Ehrlichman, and John Dean all to resign. -
President tells the senate he will not testify
The president chose that he would not give any access to anybody who wanted the presidential files. Mny people wanted him to appear or to grant access of these files to other people. -
Senate is informed of a White house tapping system
The senate up to this point did not know about the truth of the White House tapping system. This was until Alexander Butterfield told them in July of 1973. -
President refuses to write a subpoena for the tappings
President Nixon ws called into court but refused to even speak of the White House tappings. He refused to reveal an of the tapes or documents found from these tappings. -
President agrees to hand over tapes and comply a subpoena
The president then relizes how much need there is for these tapes and he decies to release them. He also agrees to appear in court on behalf of these tapes. -
Senate announces a gap in the tape from June 20th
The Senate Committee was given the tapes and wa able to listen to a conversation between Nixon and Haldeman from June 20, 1972. On this tape they also found a spot where there was an 18 and a half minute gap. -
Special Prosecutor issues subpoena for White House tapes
The special prosecutors start to issue subpoenas for the White House tapes. Overall there was a total of 64 tapes. -

The special Prosecutors first ordered this in April, but in July they knew more information. They were then again able to isue subpoena for the total of 64 different White House tapes found. -
House Judiciary Committee adopts article II of impeachment resolution against the President
This is the begining of Nixons decision to resign. The House Judicary Committee used the second article of the impechment resolution. They did this in hope to be able to get president Nixon impeached. -
House Judiciary Committee adopts article III of impeachment resolution against the President
Before Nixon resigned the House Judiciary Committee chose to use the third article of the ipeachment resoltion against the president. This states that they can make an effort to delay or cover up the existing evidence in a case. -
President Richard Nixon resigns
With all of the blame and pressure from Watergate, President Nixon decided to make a big change. Nixon decided that he would resign from his position as President of the United States. -
President Gerald Ford pardons former President Nixon
When Pesident Nixon decided to resign somebody had to be there to take his place. This man was Gerald Ford and would become the 38th president.
