Quick Peek
Take a look at transportation through the years! -
Moving West: Transcontinental Railroad
In the 1840's the American people began their movement west. To begin their journey they would start with the railroad. The transcontinental railroad was built to connect the two coasts of the United States to make travel more effective. This also made trade easier. -
Moving West: Wagon Train
As the Transcontinental Railroad was built many people still needed a means to get to the train and travel from it. Families would form horse and wagon trains in which large groups of people would travel west with their items and loved ones piled into a wagon. This was a hard journey and many would die or get sick on their way to a new life out west. -
First Car
Although previous models of the automobile were developed before this time, the first true automobile was invented by Karl Benz (1844- 1929) in 1885. This car was powered by gasoline with an internal combustion engine and it only had three wheels! Once the first cars were developed, travel was changed in America forever. -
