    This happened because home owners did not want to give up their land to the coal mining companies.

    US federal power act authorizes federal hydroelectric projects such as the Hoover Dam

    US Supreme Court allows New Jersey to dump sewage into New York harbor
  • Ralph W. Abele (1921) was born Aug. 13 (1921)

    in Allegheny County and became a conservationist and Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
  • June 16 1921: Commerce Department holds a conference

    convernce was made to go over the water pollution concern, while Corps of Engineers starts investigating oil pollution in harbors, industrial waste and sewage that was threatening some varieties of fish with extinction.
  • 1922: Corps of Engineers harbormasters respond to complaints about thick scum damaging fish

    other sea life, and fish being driven away from fishermen because of polluted waters.
  • Howard W. Laur Sr. (1926) was born Jan. 30

    in Pittsburgh and was a steel worker, teacher, and a persistent fighter for measures to protect landowners from damage and water loss caused by underground mining.
  • Edward Abbey (1927) was born Jan. 29

    in Indiana County and became an author and defender of wilderness, most famous for his two books Desert Solitaire and The Monkey Wrench Gang.
  • Richard R. Thorpe (1929) was born April 17

    in Cleveland, Warren County, forester, Pennsylvania Federation of Sportsmen's Club Board member and active in the Pennsylvania Forestry Association.
  • November 13,1929 Stock market crash

    which did help contribute to the Great Depression, that made 15 million people unemployed. Also did not help farmers.
  • April 1933: The Civilian Conservation Corps was born

    allowed single men between the ages of 18 and 25 to enlist in work programs to improve America's public lands, forests, and parks.
  • June 14, 1938 Fair Labor Standards act is created

    which establishes minimum wage and overtime pay.
