Wilmot Proviso
This bill aimed to outlaw slavery in territories taken from Mexico. The bill passed in the House of Representatives but was defeated in the Senate thus causing a division in Congress. Although, not a success it led to the fromation of the Free Soil Party. -
Compromise of 1850
It was a series of congressional laws that were meant to settle disagreements between free states and slave states. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
A law that established Kansas and Nebraska's territory and gave their residents a right to decide to have slavery or not. -
Bleeding Kansas
Proslavery and Antislavery settlers went to Kansas Territory to vote for a territoial legislature but proslavery won and the official Kansas legislature was packed with prosalvery representatives and a civil war broke out between the two. -
Caning Sumner
Sumner's speech was attacking porslavery forces and was packed with insults in result, Brooks hit Sumner in the head with a cane. Sumner tried to defend himself but he was trapped and Brook hit him thirty times until his cane broke. -
Dred Scott v. Sandford
A supreme court case with slave, Dred Scott was going to sue for his freedom, because he was taken to a territory where slaves are illegal, but the court ruled against him. -
Attack on Harper's Ferry
John Brown wanted to inspire slaves to fight for their freedom. Himself and eighteen other followers captured Harper's Ferry arsenal they killed four people. Brown sent the word out to local slaves but no arrived. The U.S. Marines captured Bown and six others and was convicted and sentenced to hang. -
Election of 1860
The election was between Lincoln and Douglas. Lincoln for the North and Douglas for the South but since there was a larger population in the North Lincoln won the election.
