People used borrowed money to invest in stocks, as well as other stocks to buy other stocks. People became very rich off of it, until the crash in 1929. -
The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is adopted.Prohibition begins.
Gave women the right to vote. Now, women are treated almost as equal superiors to men because they have the same rights and freedoms. -
KDKA in Pittsburgh
KDKA was the first brodcast radio station. Orginated out of Pittsburgh. First show was at 6pm and was ran by four men; Engineer William Thomas; telephone line operator John Frazier; R.S. McClelland, a standby and Leo Rosenberg, radio’s first announcer. This created public news to everyone in the world. -
Congress enacts Emergency Quota Act.
This act limited the number of immigrants that could be in the United States. It passed because the number immigrants took away native-born Americans from achieveing higher pay. -
The boll weevil ruins more than 85 percent of the South’s cotton crop.
After the end of WW1, many of the farmers in the south were in debt. The boll weevil ruined 85% of the cotton crop, the South biggest contrubited to the economy. It basically ate the entire crop while farmers were dealing bankrupcty. -
National Origins Act replaces Emergency Quota Act.
The Nations Orgins Act used the cenus to develop a limit number of how many people of one ethnic group could belong to the United States as citizens. The reason for the N.O,A. was to control the amount of immigrants, and the value of immigrants. -
Scopes trial takes place in Dayton, Tennessee.
Trial was against John Scopes who taught students the theory of evalution in his class, which was against the law. Later was found convicted, but released because of a techinally appeal. -
Ku Klux Klan members stage a major march through Washington, D.C.
An increase in the number of immigrants made the Ku Klux Klan and its 40,000 members march on Washington to show its protest against these new comers. -
Langston Hughes publishes “The Weary Blues.”
Published during the age of the Harlem Renaissance. Hughes showed the struggles and life of an average African American. Gave a voice to the color people, and made the white people look at the "problem" from another point of view. -
Charles Lindbergh flies across the Atlantic.
Charles Lindberg was the man who completed the first solo airplane flight across the Atlantic Ocean. -
Sacco and Vanzetti are executed.
Convicted of murder on July 14th, 1921, both men were exceuted on the charge. Both men were later found not to be involed and were arreated and charged based on their race. -
Herbert Hoover is elected U.S. president.
Was the republican candiate, and was the president during the stock market crash. He is blamed for not taking action sooner.
