Terry Stanley Fox is born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. -
March 9, 1977
Terry learns that he has a malignant tumor in his right leg and has it amputated. Before his amputation, he reads about of an amputee runner in a magazine. -
February 1979
Terry Fox begins to train for a run across the entirety of Canada, a run he would later dub “The Marathon of Hope”. His training consisted of runner 5000 kilometres over the course of a few months. -
April 12, 1980
Fox begins his “Marathon of Hope” in St. John’s, Newfoundland. -
September 1, 1980
Terry is forced to stop running in Thunder Bay, Ontario for treatment. He ran an average of 42 kilometres over 143 days. He is determined to get healthy and continue his run. -
September 18, 1980
Terry Fox becomes the youngest Companion of the Order of Canada in a special ceremony in his hometown of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia. -
February 1, 1981
Terry realizes a goal of raising $1 for Cancer from every Canadian. The national population was 24.1 million at the time. -
June 28,1981
After going through treatment including chemotherapy, Terry Fox dies at age 22 in British Columbia.
