Operation Barbarossa

Over 4 1/2 million Axis troops took part in Operation Barbarossa. This campaign, however, became a turning point in the war. Attack on Pearl Harbour
On December 7, 1941, the Japanese military attacked an American naval base in Hawaii. The attack was a reponse to the United States' hatling of oil and other shipments to Japan after its military agression in East Asia. The attack on Pearl Harbour led America to immediately launch a war against Japan. Germany and Italy declared war on America shortly therafter. The attack brought the Americans, who had a large and powerful military, into both the Pacific and European theatres. -
D-Day
D Day: Footage, Testimonials, and other Information On June 6, 1944, Allied Forces landed on the beaches of Normandy. This was the largest ambhibious invasion in history, and initiated both the liberation of France, and major Allied advances in the Western Front. -
Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
By summer 1945, the war in Europe was over, but the pacific war raged on. The United States was still engaged in a brutal war agianst Japan, and decided that the best way to bring a swift end to the war would be to use their secret weapon--the atomic bomb. The first bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6th, and a second was dropped on Nagasaki three days later. Japan surrendered shortly therafter. The surrender marked the end of the Second World War, and the beginning of the Cold War.
