    European Settlers of Puget Sound
    "By the time of the European arrival in North America, it was home to many distinct cultures"(britannica.com). "Settlers arrived--mostly wayward souls and eccentrics who had meandered off the Oregon Trail"(Guterson 5).     "In 1913 the Webb Alien Land Law, designed to keep the Japanese from owning land, was the culmination of anti-Japanese lobbying."(britannica.com) "The witness makes reference to a currently defunct statute of the State of Washington which made it illegal at the time of which she speaks for an alien, a noncitizen, to hold title to real estate"(Guterson 122).     Dear John Letter
    "A Dear John letter is a written communication in which the author ends a personal and intimate relationship with the recipient"(grammarist.com) "Dear Ishmael,These things are very difficult to say...I am going to move on with my life as best I can, and I hope that you will too.

  • Battle of Okinawa

    Battle of Okinawa
    "Battle of Okinawa, World War II battle fought between U.S. and Japanese forces on Okinawa, the largest of the Ryukyu Islands"(britannica.com) "Carl, Art recalled, had served as a gunner on the U.S.S. Canton, which went down during the invasion of Okinawa"(Guterson 15). Guterson used it to show irony of carl dying in an accident after surviving a war.   • Pearl Harbor Memorial

    Pearl Harbor Memorial
    "Pearl Harbor attack, (December 7, 1941)"(britannica.com). "'By eight-thirty on the morning of December 7, Judge Fielding's courtroom was filled with citizens who were thankful for the heat from the boilers.'" (Guterson 270). Guterson is foreshadowing that the trial will be effected by discrimination against Japanese Americans, by placing the date of the trial on the anniversary of the pearl harbor attack.
