Battle of Lexington and Concord
The Battle of Lexington and Concord was the first encounter of the Revolutionary War. Gage sent soldiers to destroy all warfare in Concord. The soldiers were attacked by American militia and many British soldiers died resulting in an American victory. Ralph Waldo Emerson nicknamed this battle, "The shot heard around the world". -
Battle of Bunker Hill
The British had a 2-1 advantage over the Americans. Lieutenant J. Waller's called the Americans rebellious rascals because they poisoned and chewed musket balls to kill more soldiers. The British won. In the end the British realized it was a hard fight. -
Battle of Long Island
British attacked small at first in the center of American defense. While the Americans focused on the smaller British attack, Britain sent in the main force surrounding the Americans. The British win and the Americans were forced to withdraw. -
Battle of Trenton & Princeton
The Americans crossed the Delaware River on Christmas day and over the next 10 days, the Americans won 2 important battles to the Revolutionary War. The victories reasserted American control of much of New Jersey. These victories also motivate the Americans. -
Battle of Saratoga
The Battle of Saratoga consisted of two battles fought about 3 weeks apart. This battle is an American victory. It was considered a turning point in the American Revolution because France acknowledges America as their own country and chooses to support them. -
Battle of Vincennes
The Battle of Vincennes was a small but significant battle. The Americans won and were able to force the British to surrender the fort. The capture of the fort helped secure the frontier for the Americans. Also, this establishes strength in the West. -
Battle of Bohomme Richard vs. Serapis
The US ship Bohomme Richard, commanded by John Paul Jones, wins a tough fight against the British ship, Serapis. The captain of the Serapis asked Jones if he had struck his colors, Jones replied, "I have not yet begun to fight". This victory gave Jones the title in France of a great hero. -
Battle of Charleston
there were 14,00 British and 5,400 local militiamen. This war took place towards the end of the American Revolutionary War, after British began to shift their strategic focus to the American southern colonies. After 3 months of local bombardment, the city surrendered. It was a British victory. The war ended when British artillery fire was close enough to set the town on fire and and force surrender. -
Battle of Guilford Courthouse
When British arrived at Guilford Courthouse, Greene felt the time was right to fight. The British were outnumbered almost 2-1 yet they still defeated the Americans. However, the British did lose a considerable number of men during the battle. -
Battle of Yorktown
The Battle of Yorktown is considered one of the most important battles of the Revolutionary War. The British were surrounded on land and by sea by Americans and the French. This led to Cornwallis surrendering to Washington ending the war for independence.
