Royal Proclamation of 1763
Kept the colonists from moving West of the Appalachian Mountains. -
Stamp Act of 1765
Required the use of a stamped paper to prove that a tax was paid. -
Townshend Taxes
Merchants were taxed upon buying imported goods, so that their sale prices would rise, indirectly taxing the colonists. -
Boston Massacre
Rioters were shot at by 8 British soldiers after one of them was hit in the head with a club. -
Boston Tea Party
A dumping of tea in Boston by the Sons of Liberty into the water of the ports of Boston. -
The Intolerable Acts
A punishment for the Boston Tea Party, they were supposed to break apart the colonies, but instead brought them together more to fight. -
The First Continental Congress
56 delegates from all colonies except for Georgia, met to decide what to do about the Intolerable Acts. It was also an illegal meeting at the time, because they didn't have permission. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
The first battle of the American Revolution. British soldiers were attempting to seize American weapons. -
Second Continental Congress
Decided upon becoming their own country, and to write the Declaration of Independence. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
Large losses, over 1000 British wounded or killed, over 400 Americans wounded or killed. British won, but it showed that the Americans had a chance if they could hold off as long as they did, since they only lost because they ran out of ammunition. -
Thomas Paine's Common Sense
A pamphlet written for the common people to be able to read, it called for independence. -
Declaration of Independence
Declared independence from Britain, and explained why we needed independence. -
Battles of Saratoga
Freeman's Farm and Bemis Heights, they were a turning point for the war. It proved to France that they had a chance of winning so that France helped them. -
Battle at Yorktown
The Americans and French fought together and defeated the British Lieutenant General Cornwallis. -
Treaty of Paris
The treay which signified the end of the war between the countries. Gave Americans what they wanted.
