Professional Accomplishments and Aspirations
-
SUNY Oneonta
I officially started taking college classes at SUNY Oneonta, with future aspirations of becoming a registered dietician. -
A change of plans
It was a professor from SUNY Oneonta who reminded me of the passion that I have always had for the subject of English. I had always done best in this subject as a high school student, but never had enough confidence in myself to persue an education to become an English teacher. This particular professor gave me the inspiration and motivation that I needed to follow my dream of becoming a high school English teacher. -
First Classroom Teaching Experience
For a community service project, I chose to create a lesson on peer pressue and bullying. Without any experience in the classroom, I took my chances and lead 5 different classes through 2-40 minute lessons. From this point on, I was hooked on teaching and developed a love of watching students work together to solve problems and grow as a team. -
Academic Center Tutor
Over the summer, prior to my last year of college, I contacted the Academic Center supervisor and inquired about a possible position as a tutor. At this point, I was hired to tutor students in the subject of English as well as in organizational and study skills. -
Student Teaching
I began completing my student teaching at Lindenhurst Middle School where I taught 2 sections of 8th grade students in a. program called Raising Academic Intervention Services for Excellence. I was then transfered to the high school where I was given the opportunity to teach 4 sections of 11th grade Regents English classes. -
College Graduation, Bachelor's Degree
I graduated from Saint Joseph's College with a bachelor's degree in English and a concentration in secondary education. I also recieved NYS teaching certification in English Language Arts, grades 7-12. -
English Tutor, Farmingdale State College
At Farmingdale State College, I tutored students in English, as well as brainstorming, organizing, prewriting, and editing. I was able to observe the skills which college students were lacking, and in turn, plan to teach these skills in my classroom as a secondary education teacher. -
Substitute Teaching
I was hired as a substitue teacher at both the East Islip School District and Lindenhurst Public Schools. I substitue taught classes grades PreK - grade 12. -
English Leave Replacement, Lindenhurst High School
I was hired as an 11th grade English Leave Replacement by the school district where I completed my student teaching. I taught 4 sections of 11th grade English Regents classes, as well as an ESL regents preparation class. -
Day Habilitation Teacher, Skills Unlimited
I was offered an opportunity to use my knowledge and pedagogy of special education to co-teach a vocational and life skills class. I currently teach a classroom of high school transition students (21+) the necessary skils needed to obtain a job and gain independence after graduation from high school. www.skillsunlimited.org -
Graduation Date, Master's Degree
I plan to graduate from Saint Joseph's College with a Master's Degree in Special Education. I will eventually recieve NYS teaching certification in two different areas: Students With Disabilities, English, grades 7-12
Students with Disabilities, Generalist, grades 7-12
I will also have a severe and multiple disabilities extension, grades PreK - grade 12. -
Future Aspirations
10 years from now, I hope to have a classroom of my own in a public school setting where I can inspire students to be the best that they can be on all levels. Whether I am an English teacher or a Special Educator, I hope to have inspired my students to try new things and step outside of their comfort level to gain confidence in themselves.
