Martin van Buren v. Richard Johnson
Martin van Buren won the popular vote and electoral vote. His main competition was the Whig Party. Richard M. Johnson didn't do so well as Buren did. Samuel J. Tilden v. Rutherford B. Hayes
On the night of the election, everyone thought that Tilden won. Tilden only needed one electoral vote, while Hayes needed all twenty. Republicans controlled the Senate and Democrats controlled the house. After discussing it, the commission gave all votes to the Republican candidate, Samuel Hayes. Democrats eventually agreed to the solution that Hayes would withdraw Southern federal troops. Which ended recostructed and enforcement for blacks to have equal voting rights. -
Grover Cleveland vs. Benjamin Harrison
