1st Marcos Election
Marcos and Imelda were a popular political couple that may have brought change and prosperity into the Philippines with their new and modern mind-set. Marcos promises Order, Economic Stability, Social Growth and prosperity. While he campaigns, Imelda engages in more hands-on activities like farming with the lower class of the society. The couple seems to be promising. -
Marcos First Takes Office
Marcos is finally inaugurated as President, and people love him. They seem to think that he'll be a great leader, getting rid of all previous Philippine corruption, economic depression, and other political problems. -
Marcos Re-Election
Marcos doesn't have a major public support anymore. His action of sending Philippine troops into Vietnam to support US was a bad move, that cost him the public support. The elections are said to be rigged, and he becomes the first Filipino president re-elected. Although he still has his supporters, everything starts going downhill from this point. -

First Quarter Storm
Mnay actvists were joining the Communists, and having violent protests on streets. During the inaugural address, the Marcoses were assaulted with "coffin, a stuffed alligator, and stones". Later, they almost broke into Malacañang Palace. In this period, Marcos gained control of the news centers and helped publicize his doings. There's said to be rumors of Coup D'Etat during this time that never took place. -
Battle of Mendiola
Many students tired of the economic slow turn and spiraling crime rates become angry. They hijack a fire truck and ram it through the gates of Malacañang Palace. It was a loud and violent confrontation that results in 4 student deaths. -
1st Constitutional Convention
Since the Philippines follows the US Presidential Democracy, Marcos cannot run for a 3rd term and his term end will come soon. To avoid this, he wants to switch to the Parliamentary system with unlimited 6-year terms Thus, Marcos calls for a Constitutional Convention to amend the current constitution to one Marcos preferred, however, he failed since many of the representatives were against him. Later as Martial Law was declared, many of these people were taken as political prisoners. -
Plaza Miranda Bombing
The Liberal Party was having a meeting and discussing succeeding Manila Mayors until 2 grenades were tossed. This was filled with many political reputes, and Marcos was blamed. However, the Communist Party later revealed it was them. The Writ of Habeas Corpus was brough after this to imprison suspects, although Marcos only jailed his opponents, supposed "suspects", to eliminate rivals. -
Declaration of Martial Law on Media
After a controversial 2nd election, under the pretense of bringing order, Marcos declares Martial Law. Martial Law- Proclamation 1081, was signed on 21st September 1971 but announced it through media on 23rd. Almost 10 years of martial law continued, with it being revoked in 1981 January. While crime rates and bussinesses flourished under this, many people were unhappy. -
Arrest of Jose Diokno and Ninoy Aquino Jr.
As soon as the martial broadcast was seen. Aquino and Diokno were arrested. They were the biggest opposition Marcos had. Aquino stayed for 7 years until he was taken for heart surgery. Diokno was released in 1974 but continued to rally against Marcos in the People Power. He was a part of Cory's government, till Diokno passed away in '87 due to lung cancer. They were imprisoned in Fort Bonifcaio, where Aquino ran in elections and did a 40-day hunger strike. -
Imelda Assassination Attempt
Due to the beginning, violent anger at Martial Law declaration, Imelda Marcos was attacked during one of her speeches by an assassin. She was attacked with a knife and later required urgent care. -
Marcos Constitution Ratified
Finally after Declaration of Martial Law, and imprisonment of political critics, with his supporters, he manages to get the Parliamentary system ratified. He could have easily declared dictatorship, but to continue receiving aid from the democratic US, he need to put up a front of democracy. -
Imelda Chosen As Metro Manila Governor
Imelda was already his political right hand, helping him gain supporters and fame from back in the '65 elections. But with his declining health, many predicted Imelda would succeed him, and his supporters and he put Imelda in this powerful position. She was also Minister of Human Settlements. She helpred with Green projects, Planned Parenthood, Hunger Gardens, Foodlines, and Maternity Healthcare. Her Film & Cultural Center are iconic structures she planned. -
Tripoli Agreement
To secure Philippine Homeland security and gain the support of the Muslims, Marcos initiated a peace agreement with MNLF. This was signed in Tripoli, Libya. With Carmelo Z. Barbero representing the Philippines and Nur Misuari representing MNLF, this helped lessen tensions. Previously, Marcos had sent Imelda with a lucrative oil deal to Libya if they withdraw support from MNLF, and by charming Gadaffi, Imelda helped create better foreign relations with Libya, since MNLF support was withdrawn. -
LABAN Party Founding
Before the Aquino and some other political people who weren't jailed but against Marcos, formed the Lakas ng Bayan (LABAN- Fight in Tagalog) Party. This party ran in the Parliamentary elections but lost. -
Noise Barrage
Before the '78 elections, as a form of protest, many people made loud and horrible noises before the elction night. This was a non-violent form of protest to show that even if Marcos won (and as predicted, he did), he wouldn't be the popular choice. -
Philippine 1978 Parliamentary Elections
Though Aquino was jailed, he was still allowed to run for these elections but he and his comrades lost. Since his actual Liberal party was going to Boycott these elections, he created a Lakas ng Bayan, which ran and lost. -
Ninoy Heart Attack/ Bypass to US
After almost 7 years of jail, due to poor health and 40-day hunger strike (which weakened Aquino immensely) Ninoy Aquino suffered a heart attack. Due to the urgency of the situation, (Probably for Marcos' relief) Aquino was sent to the US with his family. He is said to spoke with the then first lady, who allowed on 2 conditions- firstly he wouldn't come back, and secondly he woudnt speak ill of the governemnt. These supposed promises are ones that Aquino broke. -
Aquino Assasination
After many years in America, spent rallying against Marcos and recovering from his heart surgery, Aquino decides to come back. It wasn't highly publicized and a very long route from Boston to Chicago, to San Francisco, to Singapore, to Malaysia, to Taiwan and finally to Manila. His assasin was imeediately killed after, so till date noone knows the actual murderer. His funeral had 2 million procession, and his death helped many rise up and join the People Power. -

Confetti Revolution
After Aquino's death, the public outrage grew very high. With a failing economy and shaky US support, in 1983, the people decided to include a new form of protest- Confetti Revolution. Many like the rich businessmen and peasants joined this cause. -
Marcos Impeachment Attempt
Right before his snap elections, people were growing aware of his declining health. The Congress decided to impeach him, and although the movement passed, Marcos made sure he was still president. -
Marcos Calls For Snap Elections
During an American broadcast interview, with questionable democracy and public support, Marcos decides to call for elections. He probably still believes that the Filipinos love him and with shaky and questionable US Support, he decides to show his popularity as president. -

EDSA Uprising
After Fidel Ramos and Juan Ponce Enrille has emergency press denouncing the government, they were immediately targeted. Going to Camp Carme with less 500 men, they almost had no chance of surviving, till Cardinal Sin announced on his radio for people to support them. Millions of Filipinos came to EDSA and camped out there, acting as a human shield. Such EDSAs took place also in other parts of the country. The people's sheer determination and support helped in Marcos' downfall. -
Marcos Family Flees To Hawaii & Corazon Aquino is inaugurated as President
Although Marcos is announced the "official" winner, it's clear that Cory won. A violent confrontation from Filipinos outside the Malacañang Palace and small support from longtime ally US, the Marcoses escape to Hawaii, where a long case awaits them. After Marcos' death in '89, Cory allows Imelda and her kids to come back. They immediately go back to politics. Although many of Imelda's crimes were acquitted, she still has cases agaisnt her. Cory's inaugurated in jolly.
