Kureo Tanaguchi final attack corregidor-> Wainwright surrendered May 6, 1942. -11,700 americans and 65,000 Filipinos -600-700 americans died and 5000-10000 filipinos died during the death march -Death due to malaria/dysentery/starvation/exaustion

The Attack on Pearl Harbor
-The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, America's largest naval base
-They were strategic about this attack - they knew that the US would get involved in the war eventually, wanted to weaken the navy beforehand
-If the Japanese had sent all 3 waves of planes the US navy may have been knocked out
-Most significant battle because itforced the US to declare war on Japan and its allies Germany and Italy, it created a trickle effect leading to the other battles
-About 2,500 Americans were killed -
Midway and Battle of Coral Sea
-This was the first interaction between carrier task forces and its carrier exports
-Lasted from May 4-8
-Major naval battle in the Pacific Theatre between the Japanese Navy and the US Navy and Air Force
-US sent two carriers, Lexington and Yorktown to intercept the invasion convoy and its carrier escorts
-Battle began, dive bombers in the sky
-Lexington very damaged, crews repaired Yorktown
-US Fleet outnumbered but had surprise
-Destroyed four Japanese air craft carriers to defeat Japan -

-USA & Japan fought for a small airstrip on Peleliu
-USA commander predicted that they would win in 4 days but Japan has great resistance
-Battle started at sea and moved to the shore, hard fought battle for the marines
-The USA was victorious after forcing the Japanese off the island and the Japanese commander, Nakagawa, to commit suicide
-Contervertial because the airstrip had little strategic signifcance and USA had 9,836 casualties, including 1,794 killed
