Nara Period
The Nara Period (710-794) -Japan was ruled under Prince Shotoku (574-622). His ambassadors brought back knowledge of government from China.
-In 710, the new Capital of Nara was on the coast of Honshu. A great Buddhist Temple was built in the city. -

Kamakura Shogunate
- Minamoto no Yoritomo seized power, but allowed the emperor to hold a symbolic position as a figurehead.
- Made Kamakura his capital.

First Mongol Invasion
-The Mongol emperor, Kublai Khan, grandson of Ghengis Khan launched a raid from Korea in November 1274. -
Oct 14, 1281
Second Mongol Invasion
-In 1281, Kublai Khan attacked Japan again from both Korea and China. This time the Japanese were better prepared. A divine storm (Kamikaze) ended the battle on 16th of August. -

Ashikaga/Muromachi Shogunate
-Ashikaga Takauji appointed himself shogun. He resided in Muromachi, a section in north-east Kyoto.
-The Ashikaga family provided shoguns for the next 200 years. -

During the 15th and 16th Centuries (1400s and 1500s) Japan was plunged into a 100 year period of
Civil War. -

-Warlord Tokugawa Ieyasu named shogun by the emperor in 1603
-Social structure developed in this time.
-The Capital city was Edo, modern-day Tokyo.
