Battle of Fort Sumter
April 12, 1861 to April 14, 1861
President Lincoln sends a ship to resupply the federal fort. Believing the ship had troops and weapons, the Confederacy fired on the fort. Due to the attack on the fort, Lincoln calls up 75,000 troops and some of the border states, such as Virginia, secede. -
Battle of Bull Run
July 21st
McDowell was in charge of 35,000 union troops. McDowell first struck on July 21st and pushed the confederates back then celebrated a early victory. Soon reinforcements were there and the confederates gathered. The amount of men was equal now and the confederates won. Even though they won the confederates were to disorganized to keep attacking and lost 1,750 men plus the union ended up replacing general McDowell. -
Battle of Antietam
September 17, 1862 to September 18, 1862
It was fought along Antietam Creek. Lee's army was smaller than the union army but the union army didnt use that to there advatage. The end of the battle was inconclusive. At the end of the battle it was the bloodiest day in American history with more than 22,000 deaths. -
Battle of Chancellorsville
April 30, 1863 to May 6, 1863
Well in the battle Lee's army was half the size of the union army. He split his army in half and attacked from both ends. Hooker stupidly took the defensive and ended up having to retreat. in the mist of the battle general Stonewall Jackson was killed by his own soldier. in the end this was a great victory for Lee and would lead him to Gettysburgh. -
Battle of Gettysburg
July 1, 1863 to July 3, 1863
Well general Lee wanted to strengthen the cause of the Copperheads. Also president Lincoln was losing fath in his army of the Potomac's commander, Joseph Hooker. The new commander lead the army of Potomac into battle at gettysburge. At the end of this battle Lee had a final attack which was latter called Pickett's Charge. The Confederacy were defeated losing 2/3 of there men in the final attack! -
Battle of Vicksburg
Spring of 1862 to July 4, 1863
The union had a long campain going. During the battle Grants 30,000 troops stoped any of the armys from joining forces. After this they just isolated Pemberton's 30,000 troops until they surrended becouse of lack of food and amunition. In the end the union now controled Vicksburg and this was a turning point in the war for both sides. -
Battle of Wilderness
May 5, 1864 to May 7, 1864
The first day of the battle was inconclusive with both armys being were they started. The second day was even more intense than the day before. By the next morning everyone was about were they started. The union army suffered 17,500 casualties and the confederates only about 1.000 which lead into the battle of Spotsylvania.
