  • Libya Before Imperialism

    • Libya was like any other African country
    • Libya had their own cultures, and seperate ethnic groups inside of it
    • Libya had 11 ethnic groups that made up the country known to be Libya before the European Imperialism
  • Ottoman Libya

    • Ottoman Turks had control of soon to be Iibya up until 1911
    • They had the land broken up into three regions.
    • Ottoman turks were attacked by the Kingdom of Itally
    • This was during the Scramble for Africa, and European nations scrambled for pieces of Africa for land, raw materials, and trade
  • Italo-Turkish War

    • War fought between Ottoman Empire and Kingdom of Italy
    • Italy eventually captured all three of the provinces that made up Libya
    • The Ottoman Turks signed the Treaty of Lausanne, giving Italy control the three provinces, and Libya
  • New Name

    • During Italy's rule of the territory was called Italian North Africa
    • This was the name of the country from 1912-1927
  • Libya Builds a Resistance

    • Libyan resistance grows in an effort to take down the Kingdom of Italy
    • The Libyan and ethnci groups that were already in Libya want to fight Italy, and take their land back to stop the Italians from taking control of their land during the European Imperialism of Africa
  • Italy gains total control

    • The king of Libya, Emir Muhammad fled to Egypt, and left his country once the Italians fully took over the land
    • The Kingdom of Italy eventually defeated the Libyan resistance
    • Whoever was left of the Libyan population either stayed, died from combat, or put into concentration camps where they died from disease and starvation
  • Religion Spreads

    • Italians brought over Catholicism to Libya, and it grew all over rapidly
    • Many new churches were built to support and spread the religion to the natives, and even between themselves.
    • The Catholic Cathedral Benghazi was considered the biggest in North Africa
  • Italian North Africa becomes Libya

    - Italian North Africa soon was named Libya because it was used by all the Greeks of North Africa so it was a good name to use for their colony
  • Italian Immigration Continues

    • Kingdom of Italy keeps sending Italians to Italian North Africa
    • This is to expand Italy, and its power
    • Italy wanted to do this to create a greater Italy
  • Libya's economy

    • The governers of Libya worked to create a large network of railroads an roads.
    • This made Libya's economy stronger, and better. -Italians soon built 400km of railways
  • Italian Immigration

    • Libya was split into two colonies, and were run by italian governers.
    • 150,000 Italians were brought to settle in Libya, roughly 20% of the Italian population at the time.
    • 26 new villages were built in Libya for Italians
    • Settlers farmed on the land that wasn't desert
