Amir's childhood and relationships
At the beginning of the novel Amir is twelve years old and Hassan eleven. In these opening chapters we gain an insight into some of Amir's key relationships, principally Baba and Hassan. Key events such as Baba building the orphanage are discussed in these opening chapters -
Kite flying contest
A pivotal moment in the story. Amir wins the competition and hopes it will be able to fix his insecure relationship with his father. However, the cost of his father's love comes at the expense of Hassan, who is the victim of a racially-motivated rape not long after the contest whilst running the final kite for his beloved friend Amir. -
Amir's birthday and Ali and Hassan's departure
After an improvement in Amir and Baba's relationship, Baba throws a party for Amir's thirteenth birthday. Amir and Hassan have become very distant following the event, and Amir witnesses Hassan being tormented at his party and yet again does nothing. A few days later, drowning in guilt, Amir decides to set up Hassan as a thief by hiding his watch under Hassan's pillow. To Amir's dismay, Baba decides to forgive Hassan, but Ali claims that he and Hassan are leaving anyway. -
The Russian invasion
The soviets have invaded Afghanistan, and Baba and Amir have fled the country for Pakistan. During this journey key events such as Kamal and his father's deaths and Baba standing up against the Russian soldier occur. -
Amir and Baba arrive in America
This is seen as one final gift from Baba to Amir -
Amir graduates college
After Baba took a degrading job in a gas station, Amir was able to go to college and graduate as an English student -
The Flea market
Baba and Amir start going to a flea market in order to make a bit of extra money. This is where Amir first meets Soraya -
Amir and Soraya are married
After Baba's declining health, he asks Soraya's father to marry his daughter to Amir, and he accepts. -
Baba dies
After Baba's health continues to decline, he is eventually taken by caner not long after Amir's wedding -
Amir's novel is published
After months of failing for a child, Amir is able to find solace in the fact his first book 'The sultans of Kabul' has been published. -
Rahim Khan's call
Baba's old friend Rahim Khan calls Amir offering him a chance for redemption, and tells hi,m he needs to come to Pakistan so he can tell him some information and untold truths
