Democritus
Democrits had the first idea of the atomic theory. his theory was that matter could not be divided into smaller pieces forever. Once at its smallest piece, this piece would be know as indivisible. -
John Dalton
Daltons theory was the next one to evolve in the atomic theory. His theory was that all matter is made of atoms. Atoms are indivisible and indestructible. All atoms of a given element are identical in mass and properties. Atoms can be neither created nor destroyed. -
JJ Thompson
Thompson was influenced by earlier scientists like William Prout and Norman Lockyer. Thompson's theory was that atoms are divisible, and have different charges. Thompson's outcome of his expirements created our electron. -
Ernest Rutherford
By following out the Geiger-Marsden experiment, Thompson, wanted to know if there were alpha particles. His gold foil experiment proved that there were alpha particles, and they were called protons. -
Niels Bohr
Bohr worked with several scientists, but his influence was Rutherford. Bohr proposed that electrons orbit the nucleus. He came up with this theory by his model of the atomic structure. -
James Chadwick
Chadwick followed Rutherford and Bohrs path and later discovered the nucleus. Chadwick discovered the nuetron because these particles had no charge and were nuetral.
