After nearly 20 years of traveling, the Mayo family finally settles in Rochester. William W. Mayo was instructed to check-up Minnesota's soldiers before they were shipped off to the Civil War battlefields. -

Tornado Hits Rochester!
Three sister tornados (two F3's and one F5) did serious damage to the city of Rochester and many Wisconsin river cities. -

Saint Marys Hospital opens
The Sisters of Saint Francis, led by Mother Alfred, had raised the money for the hospital and construction started in 1888. -

Dr. Stinchfield Becomes The First Mayo Partner
He focused on the treatment of diseases of the heart and lungs. -
Dr. Graham joins the Mayos as Second Partner
Dr. Graham was the first intern at Saint Marys Hospital. He would later leave because he did not want to sign a forn he thought made him have less ownership. -
Dr. Melvin C. Millet becomes Third Mayo Partner
Dr. Millet became a resident physician with the Mayos at Saint Marys Hospital. -
Henry Plummer Becomes Fourth Mayo Partner
He was invited by the Mayos to develop their clinical laboratories, he was known for his knowledge on blood. -
Mayo Masonic Temple Building Completed
This is the building where the Drs. Mayo, Stinchfield and Graham first had offices as the Mayo Practice. -
William W. Mayo Dies
He dies from complications related to a farm accident. -

Saint Mary's Hospital Opens Surgical Pavilion
In 1922, the Surgical Pavilion opened at Saint Marys Hospital and included a 200-seat surgical amphitheater, providing visiting surgeons with a bird's-eye view of Mayo techniques. Many surgeons also used binoculars to get a clearer view. -
Plummer Building cornerstone laid
The building would officially open in 1928. -
Mayo Clinic Moves Locations
The Mayo Clinic moves from the original building to a new location called the Plummer Building, doubling it's size. -

Modern Mayo Building Opens

Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, AZ Opens
Mayo Clinic Hospital, AZ opened in the fall of 1998 and is the first hospital designed and built by Mayo Clinic. It is located on the Phoenix campus, has 268 licensed beds with 21 operating rooms, an emergency room, a transplant center and a full-service clinical laboratory. It also offers diagnostic imaging and noninvasive heart tests, and lung testing services. -
U of M and Mayo Clinic form a multiyear research partnership
The Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics was formed in 2003 as a unique collaborative venture among Mayo Clinic, University of Minnesota, and State of Minnesota. The idea was born out of a desire to elevate Minnesota’s position in the area of bioscience research. -
