Prior to Sputnik an interest in science was on the rise, but after the Soviets were successful in launching a satellite into orbit, an increased interest in science and math were included in curriculums. More than one billion dollars was gave to those new curriculums due to Sputnik. -
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act
President Lyndon Johnson's State of the Union declared a war on poverty. This war on poverty lead to the start of Head Start, free lunches to those who need it, and paid greater attention to special education. These three things helped continue to give better education opportunities to more children. -
2002 No Child Left Behind Act
This new act held schools accountable for student outcomes. To receive federal funding, schools had to follow test standards that all students had to reach. This program was passed to help disadvantaged students reach the same goals as an advantaged student.
