The Assasination of Sarajevo was important because it was one of the events that started/ lead up to World War I. It was the assasination of Franz Ferdinand and his wife by a Serbian. -
Austria’s Declaration of War
This was the declaration of war when Austria sent demands to punish Serbia for the assassination. But the demands were impossible to meet, so Austria declared war on Serbia. This event also caused WWI. -
Schlieffen Plan
idea created by General Alfred Graf von Schlieffen that the war troops would fight and defeat France in the west then head east to fight Russia. The German’s, on their way to the east thought they could cut through Belgium, but the Belgians didn’t want them doing that. Germany then invaded them and Great Britain, an ally to Belgium helped them out and Great Britain was now brought into WWI. -
First Battle of Marne
Was the battle of the Allies and the Germans. It was known as one of the first major clashes in the west. It was important because the Allies drove the Germans back 60 miles and it foiled the Schlieffen Plan. Since the victory in the west was not short, the Russians were already invading Germany and Germany would now have to fight on two fronts. -
Battle of Limanowa
The war in which Austria and Germany fought back the Russians and drove them east in a 17 day battle. This helped Germany get the Russians off their territory because the Germans couldn’t get back to fight them in time while in the west. -
Gallipoli Campaign
The efforts that the Allies took to take Dardanelles, capture it, and take Constantinople to defeat the Turks and make a supply line to Russia. The Allies failed in the attempt. -
Battle of Verdun
The battle between the French and the Germans when new technology for war was being used and very effective. It change the way people battled from then on. They used poisoned gas, armored tanks, and larger artillery. These new weapons killed bigger amount of people more effectively than just using guns. -

Battle when British and the French were fighting against Germany. The gain of each side was German’s four miles and British gained five miles. This battle had a total half a million casualties. I think this war was useless for all those deaths for four or five miles. -
Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
This was when the German’s were sinking merchant (neutral trading) ships without any warning. One of the boats they sank was a passenger ship called the Lusitania, it killed 1,198 people. After two attacks on the German’s by the British they agreed to stop. But in they started doing it again in 1917. -
The U.S enters WWI
The U.S entered the war because a message called the Zimmerman Telegram. This message was sent from Germany to Mexico to have them attack the U.S so the U.S couldn’t go help their allies in Europe. But the British intercepted this message and told the U.S. After President Wilson asked congress to declare war, they were now in WWI. -
The Russian Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
When communists’ leader Vladimir Ilyich Lenin took power and ended his country’s involvement in the war. This treaty made Russia stop being in WWI. This action also made Russia give up some of their lands to Germany. -
Second Battle of Marne
The battle of the Allies and the Germans, in which the Allies broke through enemy lines and headed for Germany using their tanks. This then made the Bulgarians and the Ottomans surrender to the Allies. -
Armistice
The Armistice was a signing that Germany made to stop fighting. This treaty stopped WWI and brought less conflict throughout the countries. -
Treaty of Versailles
This treaty stopped the arguments between France, Great Britain, and the U.S. It made a compromise between the countries. The treaty was among Germany and the Allied powers. This treaty also made the League of Nations in which the goal was to keep peace throughout the countries.
