Rescue At Dunkirk
General Viscount Gort was the commander of the British Expeditionary Force. The British were being overrun in France, so Gort decided to pull his troops out to Dunkirk. In the end, 340,000 British, French, and Belgian soldiers were rescued. -
Battle of Britain
The Battle of Britain was when the Luftwaffe tried to gain superiority over the RAF. It started in July but went on into Spetember. The Luftwaffe had more planes and materials, but the RAF's experience is what won the battle. -
Operation Crusader
Operation Crusader was led by the British Army. After their unsuccesful attempt to end the siege by the Germans at Tobruk, they wanted another chance. On December 30, the British Eight Army defeated Rommel at Tobruk. -
First Battle of El Alamein
German General Erwin Rommel tried to attack the Allied positions at El Alamein. He attacked with his Afrika Corps, and their were major losses. The Allies were led by the British, and they held their ground. -
Second Battle of El Alamein
While Rommel pushed the Allies back, Bernard Montgomery was put in charge. He was planning a counter attack against the Germans. The British were able to win the battle, and it marked a turning point in the war, and the Germans were on the retreat. -
Operation Torch
On November 8, 1942, the British and American Armies invaded German-held Algeria, to start the campaign to liberate North Africa. The first step was Operation; the invasion of Algeria. The whole North Africa campaign laste around three years. -
Operation Husky
Operation Husky was the Allied invasion of Sicily. The Italina and German Armies were there to defend the shores of Italy. About 60,000 Allied soldiers died in the Italian Campaign which kasted about two years. -
Operation Overlord
France, and of much more of Europe was under Nazi rule. Operation Overlord, or D-Day, took place on the beaches of Normandy, and the Allied victory got a them a foothold to liberate France and the rest of Europe. Sword, Juno, and Gold beaches were the British's where they lost just 630 men. -
Battle of the Bulge
The Battle of the Bulge was Hitler's last great offensive. It took place in the Ardennes forest of Belgium, and the U.S. and Belgian armies were there to support the British. There were about 175,000 casualtes for all sides. -
Potsdam Conference
Towards the end of the war, the main three Allied country leaders met in Potsdam, Germany to discuss the end of the war. It was a follow up of the Yalta Conference earlier in the year which dealt with post-war borders.
