The Marshall Plan
The US wanted to redo/help the political stabliity in the country to help boost the economy due to economic crisis that occured. The secretary of state, Marshall called for help from the US to help Europe's economy. In the end this helped to prevent faminine and also helped to make the ecnomy worse and into even of a worse crisis. -
Berlin AIrlift
Due to the west messing with the traffic that had to do with Berlin (going to and from) the western powers decided to bring necessiites (food, coal, etc) to Berlin by ariplanes. They considered this a success becuase the Soviet Union claimed they didn't shoot any of hte planes becuase they didn't want another war to occur. -
Creation of NATO
Due to the Soviet Union's power was increasing they started to take over countries and used their forcers, so North Alantic Treaty Organization was formed. It was alliance of those from North America to Europe. It was formed to protect/help each other if they faced an attack from the Soviet Union. Eisenhower was decided to be the commander of NATO, which helped the US to be one of the stronger forces in this group. As the years went on other countries joined as well. -
Korean War
Due to North Korea invaded South Korea the United Nations helped South Korea by aiding them, while the USSR adied North Korea. The North invaded the South becuase they wanted the land of the Koreas to be under communism. In the end, both of the Koreas basically ended how they started - there were no boarder changes for instance. -
Rosenberg Spy Case
The Rosenberg's became the culprits for selling information about the US' nuclear secrets to Russia. The information was said to be on how to make these defensive strageties. The Soviets then set off their atomic bomb. They believe they did this becuase they were part of the Communist party. The Rosenbergs were then sentenced to death for selling such important information. -
Vietnam War
This war lasted form around 1950-1975. This happened through Indochina and Vietnam was the center of attention due to it was a conflict between Vietnamese and the French (who were aided by the US.) In 1975 the communist got the victory. -
Creation of the Warsaw Pact
This was signed by many different groups of Republics, which others saw as a military act and as a symbol for the dominace of the Soviets. This was a counterat to the creation of NATO. The actual underlying meaning of this was to enforce the Soviet allie to make decisions. As time went on this pact helped to strenghten other militaries in European countries. -
Sputnik
Sputnik was luanhced by the Soviet Union, which was a satellite that orbited the Earth. This was the first satellite launched into space so it started the US/USSR space race. In July the White House decided to luanch a satellite also. Sputnik was known as an ahievement that "caught the world's attention." (ColdWar.org) -
Bay of Pigs
In April of 1961, the United States wanted to overthrow Fidel Castro so they tried to invade Cuba. The United States then went to the south coast of Cuba (known as the Bay of Pigs) in which they had tons of weapons on them. Castro and his army defeated the United States and as a results he took over Cuba. The result of this was that Cuba took over the US' oil refineries and buisnesses in Cuba and then the US didn't buy sugar from Cuba anymore. -
Berlin Wall Goes Up
First of all, East and West Germany wasn't getting along due to the war, so then the Soviet Union started the "Berlin Blockade." During this time the US started the "Berlin Airlift" to give Berlin the supplies they needed. Then the gate is closed so they could only get out/away by escaping through the barbed wire. This barbed wire was then replaced by an actual brick wall. After this all of the crossing points were closed. There then was a second wall built, to prevent people to escape to the W. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Khrushchev (with Castro's approval) decided to get missles in Cuba due to they would be prepared if the United States place another attack. The president of the US at that time, Kennedy, saw pictures of these missiles being built in Cuba and he viewed these makings as an attack from Cuba which he also considered an attack from the Soviet Union as well. In response, Kennedy put a naval blockade on Cuba to stop the making of the missiles. The US then agreed to not invade/attack Cuba. -
The Six Day War
This war happened in the Middle East, due to the countries that surround Israel were mad that Israel became a country, becuase they thought it "took away their homeland." In defense Syria made Syrian fighter planes in which Israel shot so they couldn't be used anymore. Egypt then planned to attack Israel, but during this Israel took power and showed they had the most power. After this Syria and Jordan signed a cease fire agreement with Israel. -
USSR Invades Afghanistan
The Soviets invaded Afghanistan through airlifting their military into Kabul, which is the captial of Afghanistan. They also tried to go into the country from the north side at which they were met by the Afghan fighters there. The US then got invovled by sending out anti-aircraft missles, which would help to shoot the Soviet's planes. The Soviets were then majorally affected by huge finical losses. -
German Reunification & Fall of Berlin Wall
There was an announcment by the leader of the communist party that the people could come to the boarder which was being opened. They wanted to try making new boarders that were to be used for crossing. Between West and East Germany a group was formed and they decided that there was to be no more restrictions on travelers due to the communist parties starting getting weaker. After that decision the wall nearly disappeared and East and West Germany wasn't seperated anymore. -
Collaspe of the Soviet Union
The Soviet Union seperated into 15 countries. This happnened due to the West got a victory which meant that the democracy won over the totailarianism. This then ended the Cold War due to the Soviet Union collasping becuase they were one of the biggest powers in this war. This then caused a ton of reforms all around the world, including those of political and economical changes.
