Montesquieu publishes book, On the Spirit of Laws
The Spirit of Laws was the Baron de Montesquieu's book. It helped spur the enlightenment revoloution. In it, it stated the Baron's main enlightenment ideas. -
America declares Independance
On July 4th, 1776, the American Colonies declared their Independance from Britain. The Brittish had been taxing several goods, This led to much tension between the colonies and the Brittish. And on July 4th, the Colonies declared their Indipendence. -
French Revoloution
Because the poor of France were 97% of the population, and felt like they had no representation, they revolted against their King, Louis XIV. When asking to have entrance to his house, they were denied, and squatted on his Tennis court until they were granted entrance. -
Napoleon overthrows the Directory through a coup d’etat
In 1799, France was suffering the effects of military reverses brought on by Napoleons adventures in the Middle East. The looming threat of an invasion by the Second Coalition had provoked internal unrest. Napoleon planed a coup to gain power, by overthrowing the directory. -
Haiti wins freedom from France
In 1791, and ending in 1804, Haiti won freedom from France. The Haitian rebellion was the only known succesful large scale slave rebellion in history. -
Napoleon crowns himself emperor, begins to create a vast European Empire
In 1804, Napoleon declared himself emeror of France. Napoleon began spreading his vast empire which spread from present day Spain to Austria. Napoleons empire lasted for eleven years. -
Padre Hidalgo calls for Mexican Independence
In 1810 Padre Hidalgo called for Mexican independance from Spain. Starting with this, the war for Mexican Independance lasted until 1821. Much like many other revoloutionaries, he was inspired by both the philosophs and the American revoloution. -
Napoleon is defeated at the Battle of Waterloo
After ten years Napoleon's final campaign was lost. The battle of Waterloo was fought against the United Kingdom, United Netherlands, Hanover, Nassau, Brunswick, and Prussia. After a long battle the french had lost almost twice as many men as their enemies.
