Yalta Conference
Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt held a conference in Yalta in the Crimea. Berlin and Germany were divided into four zones to be occupied by the Soviets, Americans, British and French.This occupation was to be temporary. -
World War 2 Ends
USA drops bomb on Hiroshima on Aug. 6 1945. Two days later they bomb Nagasaki.Six days later the Japanese surrender. -

Marshall Plan
In Harry S. Truman’s speech he pledged American support to help the recovery of the European nations including Germany.. Three months later Truman created the Marshall plan and signed a bill to give 5,300,000,000 for the first year of the Marshall plan.The USSR felt threatened by American influence in Europe. -
Berlin Blockade Begins
USSR objects to plans to unify Germany and blocks supplies to Berlin. Allied powers including Canada airlift supplies to West Germany.

NATO
NATO formed(North Atlantic Treaty Organization) between North America nations and Europe. It was formed to protect against plans of the USSR who might attack any country in the future. The countries in NATO would protect each other. Canada was included. -
Federal Democratic Republic of Germany
French, British and American occupied zones of Germany fused to make FDR or West Germany. East Germany or German Democratic Republic remains communist under USSR control -

China goes communist. Mao Zedung creates Peoples Republic of China. -
Korean War starts
It was a proxy war.The USSR selected Kim Ill Sung to lead North Korea and Syngman Rhee was the leader of South Korea supported by the US. The 38th paralell separated the north and south. General MacArther led the UN forces to help South Korea but soon was fired for threatening to use nuclear force. The US pushed so far that China also joined the war against them. There were 1558 Canadian casualties. There was no official winner and technically it is still going on, just suspended. -
Warsaw Pact
was formed by the USSR and other European communist states to counteract NATO. -
Berlin Wall
Berlin border between East and West Germany closes. Four days later USSR starts building the Berlin wall to keep people in.
