    Win: Confederates
    At Seven Pines McClellan refused to attack the enemy with odds of 100,000 to 60,000. Instead he waited. On May 31 Confederate General Johnston attacked the Federals. The Union suffered major casualties as did the rebels. Johnston was seriously injured & Robert E. Lee replaced him. Again at The 7 Days' Battle McClellan refused to attack and was attacked on by Lee. Claiming to be outnumbered, McClellan retreated.
    Outcome: Because of the retreat, The South won.
  • Battle of Shiloh

    Battle of Shiloh
    Apr. 6-7 1862
    Win: Union
    On Apr. 6 1862 Confederate generals launched an attack on Ulysses Grant’s forces. Confederates were forced back after initial success resulting in Union victory. There were more than 23000 casualties. General Grant took forts Henry & Donelson. General Johnson attacked Grant, Johnson was seriously wounded. The Union reclaimed the lost camp from the day before.
    Outcome: Though there was a heavy death toll & both sides claimed victory, the Union won.
  • Battle of Vicksburg

    Battle of Vicksburg
    May 18 1862- Jul 4 1863
    The Union set to capture Vicksburg & split the rebels. Vicksburg was the rebel’s key to the Mississippi. May-Jun of 1862 the Union’s naval expedition to subdue the Confederate’s batteries attempt at the city by land (Dec) & Grant’s attempt to cut a canal (Feb-Mar) all failed. With a different tactic Grant took Port Gibson May 2 reached Grand Gulf May 3 & stopped a small army. May 18 Grant reached the city & blocked all city approaches.
    Outcome: Confederacy lost.

    July 1862- Aug. 30 1862
    Win: Confederate
    Lee planned to attack the army of Commander Henry Halleck & John Pope before they did. Late Aug Lee sent half of his army to be under the command of Thomas Jackson. Aug. 28 there was a fight between Jackson & Pope. Aug 29 Porter defied Pope’s orders & let Longstreet join. Mistaking the rebel’s movements as a retreat Pope attacked only to retreat when the counter attack was too great.
    Outcome: Because Pope retreated McClellan was put back into command.
  • Battle of Spotsylvania

    Battle of Spotsylvania
    May 4-21 1864
    The first engagement of the Union campaign was from May 5-7. Grant went south w/ 2 days of fighting. Defense was put up in the city. For 12 days Spotsylvania was under fire. There were 29000 total casualties. Grant tried to attack Lee several times but failed on May 9-10. The Union almost makes it past the rebels but drew back. May 12 the Union attacked at the Bloody Angle that lasted 20 hrs. & Lee fell back. Both sides attacked on the 18 & 19 but failed.
    Outcome: No side won.
  • Battle of Wilderness

    Battle of Wilderness
    May 5-7 1864
    Grant led his army through the Wilderness only to be stopped by Robert Ewell. The battle was hard because of the trees and undergrowth; it made things hard to do. The 1st battle was inconclusive. May 6 Hancock attacked along Plank Road. The fight went on w/ Longstreet joined in. Longstreet was shot in the shoulder. With the rebels disorganized the Union became organized. May 7 the Union was able to hold their own against Lee's attack.
    Outcome: Grant refused to retreat so went on.
  • Petersburg Campaign (General Grant's March)

    Petersburg Campaign (General Grant's March)
    June 9 1864- April 9 1865
    Win: Union
    Petersburg was a strategic point of defense of the rebel’s capital, South of Richmond. On June 9 the Union began its siege. The Union crossed Petersburg at the end of Aug. & captured Fort Harrison on Sept. 29. Mar. 25 1865 the rebels were driven back into the city at Battle of Fort Stedman. Grant defeated the main Southern force under Pickett & F. Lee at Battle of Five Forks (April 1). Lee surrendered on April 9.

    Outcome: Because of Grant the Union won.
  • Moblie Bay

    Moblie Bay
    Aug. 5- Aug. 23 1864
    Win: The Union
    Farragut sailed into Moblie Bay but the ship Tecumseh hit a mine and sank. Farragut climbed on to ship Hartford. When the fleet sailed onto Moblie Bay they started to fight with Tennessee. The fight lasted 2 hours. Fort Morganwas also being attacked by troups on foot. The foot attack lasted until August 23 when Fort Morgan surrendered.
    Outcome: Because of the surrender of Fort Morgan the Gulf Coast was sealed from further blockade running.
  • Sherman's March (to the Sea)

    Sherman's March (to the Sea)
    Sep 2- Apr 1865
    Gen. Sherman captured Atlanta Sep 2. The Confederacy went west and attacked Union supply lines. Gen. Thomas took 1/2 of the Union troop to Nashville & Sherman took the rest to Savannah. Nov 22 the Confederate cavalry fought w/ the Union at Griswold Ville. The rebels went south to destroy bridges & slow the Union. The Union made just as much damage as well. Sherman got to Savannah Dec 21 1864 & captured the city. Sherman headed to Charleston in Apr 1865.
    Outcome: Union won the War
  • Lincoln's Assassination

    Lincoln's Assassination
    Apr. 14-26 1865
    John Booth planned to kidnap the president on Mar. 20 but it failed when Lincoln didn't show up as planned. So he decided to kill him + 2 other people. On Apr. 14 Lincoln and his wife went to the Ford's theatre. At 10:15 Booth snuck in and shot the president in the head. Booth managed to escape. Lincoln died on Apr. 15. Lincoln's body was taken to Springfield. A lot of people came to honor him. On Apr. 26 Booth was killed.
    Outcome: The assassination had a long affect on the US.
