End of the French and Indian War
After Quebec surrenderd to the British this signaled that the French lost the war. The French and Indian War offcialy ended when the Treaty of Paris was sighned on May 1st. Because of this war, France lost all of its land in North America. About 22,000 people died in the war. Also, the war cost British money they expected the colonists to pay. -
The Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 was a document/law that restricted colonial expansion past the Appalachin mountains. The British goal here was to stop colonists from settling on Native land. King George was trying to establish Native American allies. Colonists still went past the Appalachin's, but the British offered no protection and didn't care what the Natives would do. This law gave land to the Native Americans. This law only lasted about a few years. -
Sugar Act
The Sugar Act was an act that Paraliment passed lowering the tax on molasses from 6 pence per gallon to 3 pence per gallon. However what really angered the colonists was what is called taxation without repesentation. The British taxed them, but they didn't have a colonist to help make decisions which upset them. Also all their supplies were from Britian. They wanted a variety, so they smuggled goods though the Black Market. -
The Currency Act
The Currency Act was passed by the British government on September 1st 1764. There were many goals for The Currency Act to establish. First of all, all the colonies had there own money. The goal was to make it so that the colonies had one currency. Another reason was to reduce national debt. Also there was a shortage of coins. The only way to obtain them was though the British. The British wanted to unite thier currrency with the colonies. -
Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre was an event where colonists threw iceballs and oyster shells at British soldiers. The British regulars were dared to fire at the colonists. The British captain, Preston, thought it wouuld be rather foolish to fire. But the colonists were yelling fire from behind the British. The 200 colonists who were tormenting the colonists were armed with clubs,ice balls, and oysters. One of the British firearms discharged. The British now fired, killed 5 and wounded 6. -
Boston Tea Party
The Boston Tea Party was a protest against the tax on tea. Many colonists were very unhappy; they drank a lot of tea. The group behind the Boston Tea Party was the Sons of Liberty. They dressed up as the Native group, Mohawks, and snuck on to a tea ship docked in Boston Harbor. The colonists would not let the ship unload/deliever for they were carrying out a boycott against the taxes. while on the ship, they dumped about 1 million dollars worth of tea into Boston Harbor. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
The British general, Thomas Gage, planed a seceret advance to Lexington. His plan was to capture Sam Adams and John Hancokk, who were coloniel leaders, and seize gunpowder at Concord. His advance was led by Lt. Colonel Smith, but Gage's plan was leaked by spies. The British advance on Lexington was met by 70 minuteman. Suddenly, a shot went off and the British fired. 7 soliders died. The British were met again at Concord. They retreated to Boston, but were intercepted by new waves of milita. -
Battle of New York
A British force of 32,000, made up over time. The British force snuck up on the American's, without the American's noticing. They attacked. The American force made up of 250 troops, were surrounded on all but one side. They were forced to retreat. The British force advanced, and attacked again. They captured New York without a struggle. -
Declaration of Independence is Adopted
The Declaration of Independence, drafted by Thomas Jefferson, was adopted by Contential Congress on July 4th, 1776. This important document declares that America is seperated from Britian. The Declaration of Independence also declares that all men are created equal. It also issues complaint against the British rule. Also it declares that the people have the right to revolt against a bad goverment. The British did not approve, so basicly they were fighting to keep America under their rule. -
Battle of Saratoga
The Battle of Saratoga was a important victory for the Americans. America's victory persuaded the French to help the colonies. The American troops sucessfully defeated the British and German forces. It was made up of different battles, The Battle of Bemis Hights and Freeman's Farm. The British were facing exhaustion, but were ordered to attack. The American's turned into an offensive battle and defeated the British. The tides of the war have just changed. -
Battle of Yorktown
The Battle of Yorktown was the last big battle in the American Revolution. British General, Cornwallis, set up a fort at British controllled Yorktown. George Washington learned this, and on August 21st he marched a force of 7,000, mad up of French and American troops. 2,500 men were to trick the British. French ships blocked off any escape, as well as bringing 3,000 more soldiers. The force attacked Yorktown, the British attacked, but did not prevail. Cornwalis surrendered, as it was hopeless. -
Treaty of Paris is Signed
The Treaty of Paris was the Treaty that ended the American Revolution. The British Paraliment decided that it would be too expensive to keep fighting to keep the colonies in their control. The treaty declares that Great Britian now recongizes America a seperate country under their own rule. Now the American Revolution was over, and it mkarked the birth of a whole new country.
