April 19 1775. Colonies commanding officer John Parker, James Barrett, John Buttrick, William Heath, Joseph Warren, and Issac Davis. British commanding officers Francis Smith, John Pitcarin, and Hugh Percy. The British sought out to destroy the rebels and these battles were the first battles of the Revolution War. -
Bunker (Breed's) Hill
June 17 1775.
American commanders: Israel Putnam, William Prescott, Joesph Warren, and John Stark.
British commanders: William Howe, Sir Robert Pigot, James Ambercrombie, Henry Clinton, Samuel Graves, and John Pitrcairn. The British wanted to take over the hills surrounding Boston so they had full control of the city and their strategy was to attack from the sea and land. The Americans goal to withhold the holds. -
Battle of Trenton
December 26 1776.
American commanders: George Washington, and Nathaneal Greene
British commanders: Johann Rall
The importance was to cross over the Deleware River at night and surround the Hessian forces. The American forces would launch attacks from three directions. The Americans would cut off reinforcements from the British by attacking certain positions. The Hessians underestimated the Americans and their goal was to withhold the town. -
Battle of Princeton
Janurary 3 1777.
American forces: Geroge Washington, and Hugh Mercer.
British commanders: Charles Mawhood, and Charles Cornwallis
The strategy for the Americans was to capture the garrison and British outpost. The British didn't know the attack was coming and their goal was to withhold the outpost and garrison. -
Siege of Charleston
March 29- May 12, 1777.
American commanders: Sir Henry Clinton, Mariot Arbuthnot, and Charles Cornwallis.
British commanders: Benjamin Lincoln.
British goal was to take over the city of Charleston. The Americans objective was to withhold the city. -
Fort Ticonderoga
July 2-3 1777. For the colonies commander it was Arthur St.Clair. For the British commander it was John Burgoyne and William Phillips. British sought to recapture the Fort and take control of it since the Americans overtook it in May 1775. The American strategy was to fight of the British forces and withhold the Fort due to its strategic location. -
Second Battle of Saratoga
October 9, 1777.
American commanders: Horatio Gates, Benedict Arnold, Benjamin Lincoln, Enoch Poor, Ebenezer Learned, and Daniel Morgan.
British commanders: John Burgoyne, Simon Fraiser, and F.A. Riedesel
The second battle of Saratoga was a turning point for the American forces. The British's goal was to attack the American left flank with two thousand men. The American force was stronger then what the British expected which resulted into a British defeat. -
Kings Mountain
American commanders: James Johnston, William Campbell, John Sevier, Frederick Hambright, Joseph McDowell, Benjamin Cleveland, James Williams, Isaac Shelby, Joseph Winston, and William Chronicle.
British commanders: Patrick Ferguson, and Abraham DePeyster.
Lord Cornwallis's forces were rumored to soon attack the American forces. The American forces retreated due to the rumor of Lord Cornwallis's forces attack. The Americans then caught up to the British and surrounded them with a win. -
Yorktown
September 28- October 19 1781.
American commanders/French: Geroge Washington, Marquis De Lafayette, Comte de Rochambeau, and Comte de Grasse.
British commander: Charles Cornwallis, Charles O'Hara, Thomas Symonds.
French arrived to assist the American forces to take over Yorktown from the British. The British's goal was to withhold the city. This battle prompted the British to negotiate an end to the conflict with the Americans.
