    Battle of the Atlantic

    This battle took place from 1939 to 1945, and 01/1942 to 07/1943 were decisive. German U-Boats sank unprotected merchant ships of the U.S. and allies. The Germans were successful at first, but by 1943 the allies had the upper hand.
  • Pearl Harbor Attacks

    The U.S. miitary was taken off guard on a Sunday morning. The Japanese initiated 2 full blown attacks on the Pearl Harbour, which caused 2 400 U.S. military and civilians to lose their lives. Aside from this, 1 178 U.S. military and civilians were wounded, and 18 ships and 350 planes were sunk/damaged.

    Battle of the Coral Sea

    The Japenese were winning every battle, and took over the Pacific but on this day U.S. and Australia stopped them from invading. Even though Japan won the actual battle, the allies were able to stop Japan from invading for the first time. The U.S. began to use the Island Hopping technique to break down Japan's forces.

    A U.S. carrier named Lexington took a hit from a Japanese bomber. Besides the loseses for the U.S., they could claim a victory for the first time.

    Battle of Midway

    The U.S. launched a surprise attack on Japan at a pacific island called Midway. The U.S. was successful in the Battle of Midway, though they lost 1 carrer (Yorktown), a destroyer, approximately 150 planes, and 307 men.

    Battle of Stalingrad

    This battle took place from August 23, 1942 to February 2, 1943. This was when the Germans violated their nonaggression pact with the Soviet Union and attacked. The Soviets lost 1 100 000 people in this battle.
  • Normandy Invasion (D-Day)

    D-Day is on June 6, 1944, which is when the Soviet Union was pushing into Poland. At this time, the Allies were also using North in Italy.

    Battle in the Ardennes

    The huge German offensive was in the Ardennes Forest in Luxembourg and Belgium. Their target was Antwerp, Belgium.

    Battle of the Bulge

    The Battle of the Bulge took place from December 16th, 1944 to January 25th, 1945. The German tanks broke through the American lines (80 mile front). They fought in Belgium, where 120 000 Germans died and 80 000 Americans died. The American's won this battle but were close to losing.

    U.S. Occupation of Japan

    Similar trials were held for the Japnese war criminals. The final oucome was 7 out of 28 leaders were found guilty and sentenced to death. The U.S. then ocupied Japan for 6 years, following directinos from General Douglas MacArthur. This called for a New Constitution, and introduced a free market economy.

    This conference was where Roosevelt, Stalin, and Churchill met in the Soviet Union to talk about WWII and created the United Nations.

    Iwo Jima

    Iwo Jima was an island in the Pacific that was important for U.S. to win. There were 27 000 Japense who held Iwo Jima, but the U.S. still won. Only 6 000 U.S. Marines died compared to the 26 800 Japanese troops who died.

    Battle of Ikinawa

    This was Japan's last defensive stronghold, which they used 1 900 Kamikaze attacks. In this battle 110 000 Japanese troops died, and 7 600- 12 500 U.S. troops died. From this battle, the U.S. got to declare the victory.
  • FDR Dies

    As FDR is staring his 4th term as president, he passed away which put the country in a major grieving period. The vice-president at the time, Harry Truman took over the role and became president.
  • The End of Hitler

    This was the day that Hitler and Eva Braun died by suicide with cyanide and gunshots. Their bodies were burned, and Hitler's death was on Time magazine on May 7th, 1945.
  • V-E Day

    V-E Day is short for Victory in Europe Day, which was when General Eisenhower accepted the surrended from the Third Reich. This marked when the first half of the war was over.

    Potsdam

    Truman, Churchill, Stalin and Clement Atlee, met up in Postdam, Germany, They created a blueprint to disarm Germany and wipe out the Nazi regime.They also set up the Nuremberg Trials to persecute the Nazi leaders.

    Manhattan Project

    In total, 200 000 Japanese people died because of the Atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The "Little Boy" was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945 which caused the city to collapse to dust in 43 seconds. The bomb drop of "Fat Man" on Nagasaki happened on August 9th, 1945 and leveled half of the city.
  • Gather in Paris

    On August 15th, 1945 American servicemen and women gathered together in Paris so they could celebrate the surrender of the Japanese.

    Surrender & Victory

    On August 15th, 1945 Japan offered unconditional surrender. The official date of V-J Day (Victory in Japan Day) was on September 2nd, 1945 because that was the formal surrender.

    Nuremberg Trials

    This was the international tribunal court that tried the Nazi officials. More than 23 nations tried Nazi war criminals in Nuremberg. Twelve out of the 22 defendeced were stended to the deatch penalty. The 200 others tried were guilty but had less severe sentences.
