Election of 1800
This election was between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Because the seat of Vice President weren't on seperate ballots, Jefferson and Aaron Burr had the same number of votes (73 each). The votes were very, VERY close but Alexander Hamilton decided to campaign for the "lesser of the two evils" and John Adams became Vice President. -
Marbury v. Madison Supreme Court Decision
In this event, Marbury was directed by John Adams to bring to the attention of the Supreme Court the issue of having all branches decide what the law is. The Cheif Justice, Madison, declined Marbury's petition because he believed only the Judicial Branch should make laws because it was unconstitutional. -
Louisiana Purchase
France had regained the property of Louisiana at the time Napolean was in command in France. Because he was in power, he thought about cutting off trade with the Americans through the Mississippi. However, he could not do this because Americans had offered to help the French contribute in a war with the British. The only way to compromise was to make the price four cents per acre for Americans to continue living on the property. -
Lewis & Clark reach the Pacific Ocean
After leaving St. Lewis, Missouri, it took Lewis, Clark, and their Corps one year, six months, and one day to reach the Pacific Ocean. They were searching for the Northwest Passage, a long line of rivers that stretches from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific. This, they found, did not exist. -
Treaty of Ghent
This treaty ended the war of 1812. The war was between the United States, the British, and Ireland. This restored the nation's relationship. -
Andrew Jackson Elected President (1st Term)
A man like Andrew Jackson being elected president is rare. He was uneducated and rebellious. He followed his own rules and believed that one didn't need education to be involved in politics. However, he was elected president in 1828.
