Geneva meeting for Vietnam
The Americans and other foreign countries met in Geneva over the vietnamese and french fighting. They decided to ssplit Vietnam in half, North=Communist South=Republic, and to call a cease fire to allow the french to withdraw.Thy also had decided on a general election for Vietnam. -
election for ruler of Vietnam
The nominees were Bao Dai, former emperor, or Ngo Dinh Diem,repulican. The Americans had used lots of propoganda in the hops of persuading Vietnam to vote for Diem. Diem supporters were their threatening them to vote for Diem. Diem won with 98.2% but this only undermined his authority. -
Diem denies Geneva
Diem decides to refuse to follow the Geneva convention's laws and will not comply july 1956 -
General election
The election for the election for the whole of Vietnam is under way, or it would be if Diem had not arrested all of his opponents. The elections were not held because the two sides started fighting and sabotaging eachother. -
Guerilla help!
Ho Chi Minh authorized help to Guerilla groups after he realized Diem would not stop arresting his officials.This created the NLF or the Vietcong. -
Kennedy elected
Kennedy is elected and promises to follow Eisenhowers policies towards South Vietnam. -

16000 American troops are moved to Vietnam by 1963. -

JFK is assassinated. -

Lyndon B. Johnson is president in place of JFK. -
Tonkin Resolution
The Vietnamese gunboats have shot down an American boat in the Gulf of Tonkin and the Congress has passed the Tonkin resolution.This gave Johnson broad war powers. -
1st marines
The 1st marine troops are deployed to base pleiku. -
Dong Xai
Battle here puts Marines v VC Guerillas. Troops increase to 125000. -
Starlight
In this operation US attacks Vietnamese supply ships. -
La Drang Valley
Assault on this valley gets air assistance and 400000 troops. -
Failed diplomacy
LBJ attempts to start negotiations but is refused and decides to resume bombing North Vietnam.
