Friedrich Miescher isolates nuclein DNA from infected wounds for the first time
I chose this event because when DNA is isolated it has an oppurtunity to be combined with additional DNA of a different organism, thus producing a GE organism. When Friedrich Miescher isolated DNA it led to oppurtunities of linking different strands of DNA together forming a modified organism. When Friedrich Miescher extracted DNA, he was able to take the organism's gene and combine it with a second gene. Researchers were able to further their research and create GE foods by Friedrich's example. -
William James Beal develops clinically-controlled crosses of corn (hybrid corn).
I chose this event because Beal's development had an impact on the world of today. People today are still looking back at Beal's experiment on corn. Scientists continue to dig up the seeds that he planted 121 years ago. Scientists can refer back to Beal's example and come up with ideas that can create more types of genetically engineered foods. Instead of just having hybrid foods, scientists can create more hybrid species of animals than they already do today. -
Chinese discover how to make yogurt using lactic-acid producing bacteria
This is actually 4000 BC
I chose this event because scientists today have been testing the genetical engineering of bacteria. The use of a living organism in a food requires research. Genetic engineering can be said to stretch back into BC time, for when the Chinese made yogurt using bacteria, this type of biotechnology would continue living on for years to come. Looking into the past for help in the future can provide past research already in your grasp. -
Dr. Alec Jeffries invents technique of DNA finger printing.
I chose this event because when this tequnique is produced genetically engineered products can have an improvement because of the linking of a strand of DNA to another. The DNA can be characterized to avoid unnecessary mutation. Fingerprinting can be evolved to be used on animals and plants to link the DNA together. Evolving the techniques produced for humans can help scientists in creating new strategies for producing genetically engineered foods. -
First GM crop trials of tomatoes, poatoes, and other crops begin around the world.
I chose this event because this started the research of creating GE foods. Scientissts started the creation of experimenting with GE foods. If trials had not begun, production of GE foods could have been delayed. International areas are opened up to different types of foods and negotiations between countries. Worldwide consumers buy the GE products that are being produced. Trials have helped the reduction of pesticide use and labor of farmers. -
FDA declares GE foods are not dangerous and do not require regulation
I chose this event because different views may produce over the regulating of genetically engineered foods. Some people believe that these "Franken Foods" may be harmful to humans. Society asks the question on whether or not genetically engineered foods are dangerous to the enviornment. Scientists have not been able to receive support for research of ge foods from funding agencies. Due to this, people have believed that their is not enough of extensive research going into this field. -
FDA allows companies to market GM seed
I chose this event because genetically modified foods have always been of significant controversy, having a very huge impact on moral and religious values of people. Due to the approval by the FDA on the choice of whether or not to market the seed, a very mixed array of reactions is due to occur. Certain people will be unhappy about the creation of GE foods and the FDA's approval. Companies will have fluctuating incomes of money due to certain poeple disapproving the buying of GE foods. -
First genetically engineered food product, Flavr Savr Tomato, is approved
I chose this event because when the Flavr Savr tomato was made it opened up learning experiences in creating GE foods in the future. One example of this was the Flavr Savr Tomato scientists attemp at slowing the tomato ripening process. Scientists now can continue this attempt. Another example is Flavr Savr Tomato's nutritional value was unchanged even though it was a GE product. This helps food researchers produce ge foods that will have the same health value as organic food. -
USA researchers test GM drought resistant tomatoes, salt-tolerant oats, and high calcium potatoes.
I chose this event because when GE foods are tested it creates safety from allergens. Also, these new modified foods, such as the drought resistant tomatoes, have helped farmers from around the world by not rotting. Soil salinity has been an issue and has stopped plants from growing, so salt tolerant foods have helped eliminate the issue. When GE foods are tested improvements of GE foods are made and new ideas of other GE foods are produced. -
French Court fined Monsanto $19000 for misleading public about environmental impact of a leading product "Herbicide Roundup".
I chose this event because after this incident, Monsanto's GE foods did not get positive feedback from consumers. Once consumers find out that a GE product is dangerous to the environment, people will be reluctant to consume genetically engineered foods. This will cause a decrease in GE food profits. -
GE foods will have higher benefits: eleminate allergens, increased nutritional content, and lower fat levels.
I chose this event because genetically engineered foods will begin to be modified to have higher health benefits. Due to this, the profit of GE foods will also increase because of greater amounts of consumers eating GE foods due to their health benefits.
