US declares war on Britain
Congress declared war on another country for the 1st time in history. They declared war on Britain. President James Madison spoke to Congress on June 1,1812 to persuade them to go to war. Congress signed the declaration of war on June 18, 1812. -
Battle of Lake Erie
US Captain Oliver Hazard Perry sought to take back Michigan from the British. He gathered a small fleet and attacked the British ships. Three hours later, the British surrendered.They were forced to withdraw. -
Battle of the Thames
US General Harrison pursued the British and the Indians into Canada. Harrison ordered for a charge into the British forces. While the British forces broke apart, the Indians kept fighting. Eventually, the US won. The victory broke British power on the Northwest and secured the border between the US and Canada. Indian leader Tecumseh was killed during the battle. -

Battle of Horseshoe Bend
Tennessee general Andrew Jackson attacked the main Creek Indians base after a few smaller batttles. The battle ended in a convincing victotry for the US. This led to a treaty that forced the Creek to give up most of their land. -
British Troops Burn Washington D.C.
British troops arrived in Maryland and walked to Washington D.C. The US Capitol and The White House were both burned. -
Bombarding of Fort McHenry and "The Star-Spangled Banner"
A British fleet started bombing Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. The next day, Francis Scott Key saw the US flag still flying and wrote "The Star-Spangled Banner". -
Hartford Convention
New England Federalists opposed the war. So they all gathered in Hartford, Connecticut to protest the war. At the same time, the Treaty of Ghent had been signed. This attempt to challenge national power made the Federalists lose much of their power. -
Treaty of Ghent
The Treaty of Ghent officially ended the War of 1812. Both the US and Britain agreed to return any conquered land. -
Battle of New Orleans
This final battle in the War of 1812 actually occured after the Treaty of Ghent. Neither side knew about the treaty. British troops sneaked up on the US forces. General Andrew Jackson was forced to make a stand. At the end of the battle, there were more than 2,000 British casualties and only 70 US casualties. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
British Canada and the US agreed on a compromise. It limited naval power on the Great Lakes for both sides. -
Convention of 1818
This agreement between US and British Canada gave the US fishing rights off the Newfoundland and Labrador coasts. It set the border between the US and Canada at the 49th Parallel. Both countries also agreed to occupy part of the Pacific Northwest. -

James McCulloch, the cashier the National Bank's branch in Maryland, refused to pay a new tax placed on all branches of the Bank. The Court made the decision that Maryland couldn't tax the Bank or interfere with it. -

Maine officially became a state a few days after the Missouri Comppromise was passed. -
Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was passed by Congress. It stated that Missouri would enter the Union as a slave state. Maine would join the Union as a free state. Slavery would be prohibited in any new states fromed north of 36 degrees 30' latitude. -

Gibbons v. Ogden
Thomas Gibbons was using his steamboats form New Jersey and Manhattan. He had a federal license, but he didn't have a state license for New York. Aaron Ogden sued him for this and won. However, Gibbons appealed. The Court ruled that Gibbon's federal license had more power than Ogden's state license. -
John Quincy Adams becomes President
John Quincy Adams beat out former Tennessee senator Andrew Jackson. Jackson won popularity vote but not electoral vote. Therefore, House of Representatives had to choose the President. The House chose Adams. -
