After gaining 11 years of foreign affairs experience by being an ambassador he was appointed prussian prime minister by William the First. Bismarck incresed the size of the army. He also conquered new territories and annexed parts of Germany. -

Bismarck made his famous "Blut and Eisen" speech before the Prussian Legislature. His speech meant that Bismarck believed state is based on the willingness to fight and and the willingness to spend a large amount of money creating large armies. After Germany won the Franco-Prussian War, the southern Germen States decided to unite with the northern German States. When the two parts united the German Empire was establisged. This empire would stay together until 1914. -

representatives from Russia, Great Britian, Austria-Hungary,Germany, France, italy, and Turkey were present. During this Congress the Treaty of Berlin was signed which pushed the Bulgaria border back pased the Balkin mountains. This Treaty stayed in effect until the Balkan Wars in 1912-1913. -

Bismarck Dies
On July 30, 1898 bismarck died in Friedrichsruh, Germany. Bismarck was eighty-three years old when he died. After the death of his wife a few years earlier Bismarck lived out his final years bored, pessimistic, and resentful. Inscripted on bismarck's tombstone is "A true servant of the Emperor William the First." Even though Bismarck died 115 years ago his legacy lives on.
