After years and years of playing second fiddle to a number of actresses, Streep pulled off her 3rd win (2cnd in leading actress) for playing the controversial Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. The win garnered some harsh criticism, as Viola Davis (Streep's co-star from previous film Doubt) was seen as the favorite to win; she even beat Streep for the Screen Actors Guild Award. Nevertheless, Streep capped a record setting 18 overall nominations with a 3rd win.
