There he visited many people and places, and further influenced the growth of Islam in his empire when he returned. When he returned he also built many mosques, such as the famous Djinguereber Mosque in Timbuktu to make Mali a cultural center of the world. -

In the year 1435 Sunni Ali, a Songhai prince declare's Gao's independence. (Gao is a province in the Mali empire). Aided by Songhai warriors they successfully fought off the locals' attempt to regain the city. -
Sultan of Morocco takes Timbuktu, ends Mali and Songhai empires
In the year 1590 the sultan of morocco sent 4,000 soldiers to defeat the Mali and Songhai empires, they were successfull. NOTE: The Mali and Songhai empires both existed aroung the same time periods, however during the late 1400's the mali empire declined and part of it was merged with the growing Songhai empire. Neither the Mali or Songhai completely wiped each other out.
