Korean War Starts
War started when North Korea crossed the 38th Parallel.
Comparison of Wars:
Both in the Korean and Vietnam wars, part of the reason the wars started was because both sides wanted the political party they were supporting to be the official leaders within the whole country which sparked tensions and led to violence in the end.
The US wanted a capitalist gov. in Korea, the USSR wanted a communist government.
The US wanted a capitalist gov. in Vietnam while a communist one had a lot of support. -
Period: to

Truman Adress on Korean War
US president Harry Truman talks to the public about the motives by which the US entered the Korean war.
Comparison of Wars:
Both president Truman and President Eisenhower addressed the public on the motives for entering the Korean and Vietnam war. Both of them placed a dark light and blamed it mostly on the communist powers who were attacking and whom they could not let win because the communist movement would spread. -
UN Inchon Landing
Day the UN forces (mostly US) landed in South Korea
Comparison of Wars:
On this day the UN saw through their promise of intervention in Korea, something they did not do in Vietnam. The UN did not help at all during the Vietnam war while it supported and joined the fight in the Korean war. The UN also discouraged all involvement within Vietnam. -
Railroad Massacre
Massacre close to Seoul by some railroad tracks. Many Korean civilians killed.
Comparison of Wars:
Both wars were incredibly brutal. Because in both wars the civilians looked a lot like "the enemy" to the US, many times they were harmed due to any suspicions the US might have had, much like the railroad massacre and the Mai Lai Massacre. -
End of Korean War / Armistice Signed
War ended when both sides signed an armistice promising to stop violence temporarily. An armistice stops conflict for a period of time, which means conflict could still erupt in present day and that the war has not ended yet.
Comparison of Wars:
In Korean war the armistice signified a temporary end to the conflict, in the Vietnam war it signified the US's exit from the war. Help towards South Vietnam was supposed to be cut off for the rest of the war. Vietnam was to fight out the war alone. -
Eisenhower "Domino Theory" Speech
President Eisenhower delivered his "domino theory" speech, comparing Vietnam and other countries as dominoes, and saying that if one fell, all the others would topple down (to communism).
Comparison between both wars:
Both president Truman and President Eisenhower addressed the public on the motives for entering both wars. Both of them placed a dark light and blamed it mostly on the communist powers who were attacking and whom they could not let win because the communist movement would spread. -
Start of Vietnam War
War started when the Vietnamese MAAG (US group for war) was created. (Official date the US established they were at war with Vietnam. The date the war started is highly controversial).
Comparison of Wars:
In both wars, part of the reason the wars started was because both sides wanted the political party they were supporting to be the official leaders within the whole country
which sparked tensions. The US wanted a capitalist gov. in Vietnam while a communist had the most support. -
Period: to
Vietnam War
7 Apr 1954 - Eisenhower "Domino Effect" speech
1 Nov 1955 - Start of war
16 Mar 1968 - Mai Lai Massacre
27 Jan 1973 - Paris Peace Accords Signed
30 Apr 1975 - End of war -
Mai Lai Massacre
US soldiers murdered many men, women and children thought to be involved with communist forces when the official order was to search for and locate those communist forces.
Comparison of Wars:
Both wars were incredibly brutal. Because in both wars the civilians looked a lot like "the enemy" to the US, many times they were harmed due to any suspicions the US might have had, much like the railroad massacre and the Mai Lai Massacre. -
Paris Peace Accords Signed
The Paris Peace Accords were signed by North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the United States.
Comparison of Wars:
The Paris Peace Accords were signed during the Vietnam war, and like the Korean armistice, stated an amount of time where violence would not ensure. Yet it only signified the US's exit from the war. Help towards South Vietnam was supposed to be cut off for the rest of the war. Vietnam was to fight out the war on its own. -
