Historical Globalization
Historical Globalization is a large part of Canadian history. It helped Canada to become what it is today, from establishing its population to supplying it with good's, historical globalization has made a lasting impact. -

Fur Trade Began in Canada
The fur trade began almost the instant that Canada was discovered. Beaver felt hats were the height of fashion and in high demand with low supply. The beaver was nearly hunted to extinction in Europe and so they turned to Canada's resources to supply their needs. This is important to historical globalization because this was one of the first exports of Canada and this was the way that Canada was included in globalization as a whole. -
The Columbian Exchange
In 1519, the Columbian exchange had already been around for several years. The exchange greatly impacted Canada because many new ideas and goods were brought from Europe and Asia. New goods like spices, pots and pans, guns, new fruits and vegetables. New ideas like reading and writing words and science. Sadly, the exchange of diseases was not uncommon either. This is important because Canada was getting its first glimpse of what globalization looked like. -
Hudson's Bay Company Founded
The Hudson's Bay Company was established, there was no other company like it. It had a monopoly over the Indian and fur trade and eventually, it was the largest chain of stores in the country. This is important because this company played an important part in the globalization of Canada. Though it was a Canadian company, it did export and import goods establishing Canada's reputation in globalization. -
The Seven Years War Begins
The Seven years war was fought because of the competition between Britain and France. Though the two empires had been fighting for many years before hand, the war took it to the extreme. This is important for historical globalization because the war prompted all sorts of European colonies to colonize in Canada. This brought knowledge and culture to Canada, aiding in globalization. -
The Seven Years War Ends
The war, though it was long and gruesome, was an asset to Canada in the long run. It brought other European powers to colonize in Canada (and a lot of other western countries). Many legacies were left after the war. Britain had taken control of New France, Cape Breton Island and Florida, making it the dominant power all over America and Canada. This is important because after the war was over and the Royal Proclamation declared, many people from all over Europe settled in Canada. -
Quebec Act
This act was put in place in Quebec to allow French civil law to remain intact. This made the seigniorial system that was in place at that time to remain and stay strong. This is important because the majority of Quebec was structured this way and you can still see some of the land divides today, because it shaped a very important part of Canada. It shaped a lot of the religious and governmental statutes that have greatly impacted Quebec and all of Canada. -
The War of 1812
This war was fought between the USA and the European empire but it was fought along the Canadian border. It was a conflict that began because of restricting trade agreements and several other things. It is important because the war unified the people already in Canada to defend their land - it helped them become true Canadians. -
Great Migration of Canada
This was a period of high immigration to Canada from Britain. It involved around 800, 000 immigrants from all over Europe, America and Asia. It occurred because of the Industrial Revolution, loss of jobs and catastrophe's in other countries. People came to Canada to restart. This is important because this is how Canada was populated and how its government and land divisions were created. It was the birth of Canada as we know it today. -
Fur Trade Ended in Canada
The main reason for the fur trade ending was that beaver felt hats went out of style in Europe. This is important because Canada had to rely on other exports now like fish off of the coast and vegetables such as potatoes. Canada now exported much more than just furs and this established Canada even further in globalization. -
Residential Schools
The first residential school opened in 1861 and was called Presbyterian Coqualeetza Indian Residential School. Residential schools were "schools" for first Nations children. At these schools, the children were taught about European culture - the languages of Europe, the clothing styles of Europe, the religion of Europe ect...- and subsequently lost their own culture in the process. Many children in the residential school system were abused when they were there, mentally and physically. -
Residential Schools
This is important to historical globalization because it shows how far this country has come. When the settlers first came here, there was violence and discrimination everywhere. We have learned that everyone is special and that no one should be looked down upon because of race, religion or anything else. -
Outbreak of Smallpox
The outbreak of smallpox among the First Nations in Canada took a devastating toll on the culture of this country. Because the First Nations were not immune or had sufficient medicine to combat diseases such as smallpox, many First Nations tribes died out, taking their knowledge and culture with them. This is important because they were apart of Canadian culture and because of these outbreaks and deaths, we may never know some amazing information about the history of Canada. -
World War I
World War I was a war between the highest powers of the world in 1914. Powers like Britain, Germany, Japan and the United States. Many supply ships were sunk before reaching their destination, international trade and investment collapsed and most of the funds were going to purchasing weapons for people's respective countries. This is important because globalization nearly ended in 1914 because of the war. It taught people how much we actually need globalization and how much we depend on it. -
World War II
World War II encouraged many trading agreements that we have in today's society. Agreements like eliminating tariffs on goods and a reduction in transportation costs. This has made it much easier to trade goods and products all over the world. It is the reason that globalization is so important in today's society. -
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
The charter allowed people to live without fear of persecution or condemnation. This is not an important legacy of historical globalization but rather a lesson that we learned from it. Discrimination and being racist were normal parts of life. Being hateful wasn't abnormal and it was accepted. We learned that being prejudice against someone or a group doesn't help anything. It tears a Nation apart and in times like World War one and two, being from two different cultures didn't matter. -
Multiculturalsim Policy
Canada's multiculturalism policy was a big issue for all Canadians. It showed how we are centered on an equal environment for all people. This is important because many people in the past were very racist against anyone that was different from themselves. Having equality at the center of all decisions in Canada opened doors to globalization like having people from foreign countries in seats of government authority and having them be more knowledgeable on a subject because of their background.
