North Korea attack South Korea
First major proxy war, started because the U.S. and the Soviet Union were split in Korea. They argued over the type of government and eventually it became divided. North Korea tried to unite the country with a war but then many nation poured in supplies and soldiers to protect. Finally, the nation remained divided. And 1,000,000 Koreans died and 54,000 Americans. Also, 20 billion dollars were spent by the US. -
Warsaw Pact
Was for military cooperation between the Soviet Union, Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland, Rumania, and East Gemany. If an attack against one country was taken, then that was an attack against all. This divided the world into two large groups which risked a 3rd world war. -
Fidel Castro Becoming Prime Minister of Cuba
Fidel Castro lead an uprising which lead to a new government. Castro declared himself a communist and took control of American-owned farms and property in Cuba. -
Bay of Pigs Invasion
America trained Cuban exiles. About 1,400 landed on the Bay of Pigs on April 17 to rise and revolt. The Cuban people did not rise and revolt, and the invaders were quickly killed or captured. -
Berlin Wall
The wass was put up in between East and West Germany. This was to keep people from escaping to East Germany. Anyone who tried to escape would be shot. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Fidel Castro and the Soviets had a strong relationship. The Soviet Union set up nuclear missiles in Cuba, which the US noticed. They ordered a blockade and got ready for war. Finally, the Soviet Union removed the nuclear missiles if the US promised not to attack Cuba. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
President Lyndon Johnson used the fact of American ships being attacked by North Vietnam to convince the government to let him put as many soldiers as he wanted in South Vietnam.
