Cleaning in the mid-late 1800's
One of the first inventions that assisted in cleaning was called the “Whirlwind”. It was invented in Chicago in the 1860’s by Ives W. McGaffey. A sketch of it is shown here.

Cleaning in the early 1900's
British inventor Hubert Cecil Booth invented the first electric vacuum cleaner. Post-World War II
In the mid-1900’s, vacuums became less of a luxury item for the rich and more common in middle class households. They were by this point upgraded from old models in only needing one person in order to operate the device.

James Dyson's Innovations
No major changes to the technology behind vacuuming came around until near the end of the 1900’s with James Dyson’s innovation of the “Cyclon”, an improvement to the previous designs of the vacuum through the use of a “bag less dual cyclone machine”

Introduction of Cleaning Robots
At this point cleaning becomes robotic, without the need for manual labor. The Roomba is a robot that is able to clean floors of a house automatically through vacuuming. It can be assigned to certain rooms in a house to clean by blocking off other areas. It can also clean the walls of a house, and even be programmed to clean certain areas on a schedule.

Improvements to Cleaning Robots
Improvements and new features continue to be added to these cleaning robots as new models are released to the public. Shown here is a more recent model of the “Roomba” robot, which unlike older models includes a wireless control panel to be able to give commands to the robot from afar.
