  • The Great Coalition

    The Great Coalition
    The Great Coalition was a coalition of the two political parties. Canada West and East. They did this because when it came to take action or charge and do something in government, neither party could. They need a double majority to do so and both Canada East and West had the same number of seats. This absence of power was what lead to the Great Coalition. After this deadlock was removed they came about the idea of Confederation...and believed it would prevent any further deadlock.
  • Charlottetown Conference

    Charlottetown Conference
    The 4 Atlantic colonies met to discuss the idea of a Maritime Union, who were somewhat fearful of Confederation, thinking it would steal their heritage and money.
    Canadian representatives also came and impressed the Maritimers.
    The result: agreement on a federal union.
  • Québec Conference

    Québec Conference
    Maritime delegates came to Québec City to meet with the others to disucss the terms of a federal union. John A. MacDonald directed and wrote most of the 72 Resolutions. Decisions:
    1. Parliamentary system of government
    1. Ties to Britain would remain
    2. Federal and provincial governments would existThe Vision:"A Mari usque ad Mare" = A Country from sea to sea
  • London Conferance

    London Conferance
    In December of 1866 the London Conference began and under the stewardship of John A. Macdonald, the various points of contention that were still outstanding were resolved and a compromise found. The two Canada's, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick became the first members of the new union and the name Canada was officially chosen.

    • The Hudson’s Bay Company sold Rupert’s Land to the the Dominion of Canada, Rupert's Land was apart of the Northwest Territories at the time • December 1, 1869 was the original transfer but was corrupted by the Red River Rebellion so the government assumed control after on July 15, 1870 • On November 19, 1869 the HBC surrendered the land ownership to the Crown which was then given to the government of Canada who later paid for the lands to the HBC, this was called the Rupert's Land Act

    • They had decided not to join during Confederation because they had strong trading ties to the U.S., and they were afraid they would lose power as the smallest province of Canada • They accepted because they were given help to buy their land from British landowners and to pay their debts for building a railway
  • Sir John A Mcdonald dies

    Sir John A Mcdonald dies
    On July 1st, 1867 Sir John A. Macdonald and his wife led the ceremonies which official oversaw the birth of Canada in the sleepy lumber tow of Ottawa. During the summer of 1867 Sir John A. Macdonald easily won the national election against his rival George Brown.
    In November of 1867 Macdonald at the age of 52 opened the first Canadian Parliament in Ottawa.

  • Nunavut

    Nunavut
    Nunavut was formed from part of the Northwest Territories in 1999. When Canada first became a country, Native people were not asked what they thought about Confederation. In fact, the Government of Canada took control of the land, resulting in changes to the Inuit way of life. In the 1970s the Inuit began to talk to the Canadian government about creating a new territory called Nunavut.
