    ALABAMA UNIVERSITY MISSION STATEMENT
    The purpose of the Sports Medicine Program is four-fold. First, we hope to allow easy access to sports medicine services to student-athletes. Second, we hope to encourage a philosophy of sport that places a high value of health and wellness. Third, we hope to enable injured student-athletes to return to their sports as soon as medically safe. Finally, we hope to be able to substantially reduce the risk of athletic injury for those student-athletes in our service.

  • NATA (National Athletic Trainers’ Association)

    NATA (National Athletic Trainers’ Association)
    • The National Athletic Trainers’ Association was founded in 195, when the first group are athletic trainers got together in Kansas City. About 200 athletic trainers met to discuss the future of their professions.
  • First Athletic Curriculum

    • First Athletic Curriculum Model was developed to prepare a student not only for athletic training but teaching the skills as well. This curriculum was also included for the cources needed to be accepted in physical therapy schools.

    • The first certification examination was held during 1970. This certification is to be done to evaluate the critera that determine eligibilty.

    • NATA approved all undergraduate programs to offer a major in athletic training in all athletic education programs. Athletic training combines the love of sports and the science of exercise
  • Guidelines

    Guidelines
    • The publication in the Guidelines magazine noted the athletic training major as well as two other features to the program. The first was the inclusion of specific subject matter requirements instead of specific courses and the second was the Competencies in Athletic Training which replaced the behavioral objectives of the 1970's.
  • American Medical Association

    American Medical Association
    • In June of 1990 the American Medical Association recognized athletic training as an allied health profession for the first time. Along with this recogniton standards were set.

    • The first two entry level athletic training education programs accredited by the CAHEA were at Barry University and High Point University.
  • Task Force

    • The Education Task Force reviews all aspects of athletic training education at the undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education levels.
  • Athletic Trainers' Society

    Athletic Trainers' Society
    • The task force was created to explore an international system for the athletic training system. This task force allowed for study of all the needed guidelines to be placed in the task force.
  • HealthCare

    • World Congress on Exploring Globalization of Healthcare for the Physically Active was held. The first event of the federation was held. More than 50 practitioners and educators from more than 10 countries were in attendance.

    Ground breaking legislation for insurance reimbursement-This legislation applies only to healthcare policies that are renewed after that date, While the New law does not mandate or require reimbursement for particular services, it does make certain that insurers cannot avoid paying for otherwise covered services merely because the services were provided by LATs.
